Director Mike Nelson talks cult horror reboots…
As a big movie fan, I’ve noticed we’ve been getting a lot of reboots and remakes lately, but now it feels like they’re really digging into those beloved cult films from the past. One that recently caught my attention was ‘Silent Night Deadly Night,’ the 1984 horror movie that everyone lost their minds over – seriously, a psycho Santa with an axe! It actually spawned five sequels, which is pretty wild. So, when I heard director Mike Nelson was planning a reboot, I definitely took notice.
The Silent Night Deadly Night story
The movie centers around Billy Chapman, who witnessed the murder of his parents by a person in a Santa Claus costume when he was a child. Years later, deeply traumatized, Billy takes on the guise of Santa himself to enact a brutal and bloody revenge.
When the movie first came out, it had a slightly better opening weekend than A Nightmare on Elm Street, earning about $161,800 more, largely because it was shown in many more cinemas. However, ticket sales fell sharply – by around 45% – after just one week. This drop was caused by protests from parents who were upset about the portrayal of Santa Claus as a killer.
So what did Mike Nelson tell us?
Mike Nelson successfully rebooted the Wrong Turn franchise in 2022, though some fans initially reacted negatively – a challenge that might have deterred other directors. We recently spoke with Nelson about his new version of the film and he shared fascinating behind-the-scenes details, including hidden Easter eggs, surprise cameos, on-set mishaps, and plans for a sequel.
