5 Upcoming Movie Sequels That Could Actually Beat the Original Film

It feels like sequel season again! Even though it’s only February 2026, we’ve already seen several follow-up films, including Greenland 2: Migration, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, I Can Only Imagine 2, Scream 7, and The Strangers: Chapter 3. While most of these are just okay, this year’s sequels seem different. Several upcoming movies actually look better than the originals. They’re improving on what worked before, adding great new cast members, and boosting the special effects, giving them a real advantage.

While Toy Story 5 will probably feel more similar to Toy Story 4 than the original, and Avengers: Doomsday is hard to predict, these upcoming sequels have the potential to be even better than the movies that started their series.

5) Ready or Not 2: Here I Come

With the latest Scream film being disappointing, many fans are wishing the directors of the previous installments, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, were still involved. However, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is a fantastic alternative, and realistically, the Carpenter sisters’ story arc in Scream had already come to a natural conclusion.

As a huge fan of horror-comedy, I’m really excited about Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Everything I’ve seen suggests it’s keeping the same fun, energetic vibe as the first Ready or Not, which was a modern classic. Samara Weaving seems fantastic as always, and the addition of Kathryn Newton, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and even David Cronenberg is seriously cool! Honestly, the team behind Ready or Not, Scream, Scream VI, and Abigail has been on a roll, and I can’t picture Here I Come being any different – I have a feeling it’s going to be another win.

4) Jackass 5

Although Jackass Number Two remains the peak of the series, Jackass Forever earned the most positive reviews – and rightfully so. It successfully delivered the heartwarming reunion that American Reunion attempted but failed to achieve.

Honestly, I was a little surprised to hear Johnny Knoxville and the Jackass crew were making another film – they always say it’s the last one! But this really might be it. While Knoxville is wisely staying out of the bull ring this time around, Forever is just so genuinely fun that it feels like a welcome addition to the series, not a pointless cash grab. It’s great to know we’ll get to hang out with the familiar faces again, and I’m especially excited about the new additions, Sean “Poopies” McInerney and Rachel Wolfson. I think Jackass 5 could actually be as good as the first Jackass movie, though surpassing Jackass Number Two? That’s a tall order!

3) The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Honestly, after that ’90s Mario movie, I really thought a good Mario film was impossible. But The Super Mario Bros. Movie totally proved me wrong! The animation is gorgeous, and they nailed the casting – it’s just a really fun movie that everyone in the family can enjoy.

The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie appears even more grand in scope and is just as visually stunning as the first film. Adding to the excitement, well-known gamer Brie Larson is joining the cast, and she’s sure to bring a lot of enthusiasm to her role. The trailers suggest a movie that will be both funny and heartwarming, and it has the potential to be even better than the original – although Chris Pratt’s voice as Mario is still a bit questionable.

2) Spider-Man: Brand New Day

It’s too soon to make a definitive judgment, especially since we haven’t even seen a trailer yet. However, Destin Daniel Cretton is the perfect choice to take over. Jon Watts did a great job directing three films, and while it’s disappointing he’s moving on, Cretton is the best possible replacement.

Destin Daniel Cretton proved he’s great at launching new Marvel stories with Shang-Chi, and this film feels like a fresh start for Spider-Man, similar to Spider-Man: Homecoming. His success with Wonder Man further shows he’s a perfect fit for Marvel, so expectations are high that this movie will surpass even Homecoming.

1) Mortal Kombat II

The new Mortal Kombat II movie is expected to be a significant improvement over the surprisingly enjoyable 2021 Mortal Kombat film. Warner Bros. seems confident it will be a hit, as they’ve scheduled it for a major summer release.

The positive reaction is understandable – the trailers are really captivating. Even people who haven’t played the games seem to think it’s going to be a fun, action-packed, and funny movie. Karl Urban’s performance as Johnny Cage is expected to be a major highlight and elevate it beyond the already successful reboot.

I’m really curious to hear which sequel everyone is looking forward to the most! Let me know in the comments, and come share your thoughts with other fans in the ComicBook Forum – it’s a great place to discuss everything comics!
