The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie seems set to finally introduce Captain Toad, something fans have long suspected since the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While Keegan-Michael Key’s character in the first film hinted at the role, he never officially became Captain Toad.
It’s easy to get Captain Toad and Toad confused, but they’re actually different characters! The original Toad is known as Princess Peach’s faithful helper. Captain Toad, first appearing in Super Mario Galaxy, is an adventurer who leads the Toad Brigade and even stars in his own game, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie May Finally Confirm That Toad Really Is “Captain Toad”
The separation between the two characters has been the cause of some confusion, especially since The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s interpretation of Toad shares Captain Toad’s interest in exploration, and even wears a backpack, not unlike one associated it with the Toad Brigade leader. Not only that, but Captain Toad’s theme music, “The Toad Brigade,” can be heard in the film.
A recent trailer for The Super Mario Movie briefly featured Captain Toad. In some shots, including one with Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, he’s wearing a red bandana – a key part of his design in the video games. However, he appears without it in other parts of the trailer.
This connects to the theory that Toad and Captain Toad are now the same character, instead of being separate people in the Mario universe. If so, the movies might be slowly showing him become Captain Toad. The red bandana he’s wearing could be part of that change, or it might have already happened earlier in the film.
Considering clues from both movies – like the backpack and bandana – and the potential creation of the Toad Brigade, Mario’s transformation seems to be nearing completion in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It’s likely Rosalina or Princess Peach will formally give him the title of “Captain,” finalizing his look and role.
Since Captain Toad first appeared in Super Mario Galaxy, that game provides the perfect backdrop for his story in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Becoming a captain could be the natural next step for Toad after adventuring with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Yoshi as they fight Bowser Jr.
