Unfortunately, many fantasy shows don’t get the chance to finish their storylines, and some cancellations are particularly frustrating. It’s one thing if the creators suspect a show might be canceled and can create a season finale that could also serve as an ending. It’s much worse when a show is canceled on a cliffhanger, leaving important questions unanswered.
It’s frustrating when shows leave storylines unfinished, and it happens a lot. Whether it’s a fantasy series that altered its original story without explanation, or a show building towards a conflict it never actually showed, these programs leave fans feeling unsatisfied and without a proper ending.
5) Shadow and Bone

The series Shadow and Bone resolves its main conflict with the character of The Darkling before the end of its second season, which is fortunate considering Netflix has cancelled the show. Despite this cancellation, the final episode leaves viewers with unanswered questions, making the show’s end feel disappointing. In a departure from Leigh Bardugo’s novels, the series concludes with Alina Starkov becoming queen and gaining control of shadow powers.
While some fans might have preferred this conclusion for the character in the books, it’s something we’ll never have explained. Because the show took a different path, viewers can’t find answers in the original story either. This is on top of other unresolved storylines, such as what happened to Matthias (which is covered in the books) and Mal’s journey with Inej (which isn’t).
4) Warrior Nun

Unlike many of the shows on this list, Warrior Nun provides a relatively conclusive ending – it could have been the end. However, that doesn’t mean it’s completely satisfying or ties up all loose ends. Ava’s sacrifice and journey to the afterlife create new mysteries, and we’re left wondering about Beatrice’s plans after leaving the Order. While the fates of both characters are open-ended, their stories ultimately feel incomplete. This is because the show’s creator, Simon Barry, had plans for a third season (as shared by The OCS Newsletter) that unfortunately never came to be.
Beyond questions about how the characters’ stories ended, Season 3 left some important plot points unexplored. I, for one, was hoping to learn more about the character Reya. Sadly, with the future of Warrior Nun movies uncertain, it’s unlikely these unanswered questions will ever be addressed.
3) My Lady Jane

The ending of My Lady Jane gives its main characters a happy outcome, but it leaves many viewers feeling unsatisfied. The season wraps up with Jane and Guildford riding off together, but doesn’t resolve the major issues facing the kingdom, particularly the fact that Queen Mary is still in power. This unresolved plot point, and several others, makes the show’s cancellation without a second season particularly disappointing, as it leaves too much unanswered.
The show leaves some major questions unanswered, like whether Edward VI will regain the throne and the ongoing war between the Ethians and Verities. Unfortunately, because My Lady Jane was cancelled, we don’t get a proper ending. While a book explores how things could have concluded, it’s still disappointing not to see the story finished on screen.
2) The Wheel of Time

Honestly, while a lot of people criticized the first couple of seasons, I wasn’t totally shocked when The Wheel of Time got cancelled after season three. Still, it was disappointing, especially since it felt like the show was finally hitting its stride. Now, season three ends with so many storylines unfinished, and it looks like those of us who enjoyed the show will have to turn to the original books by Robert Jordan if we want to know what happens next.
The Prime Video series deviates quite a bit from the original books, changing characters and plotlines. And if you were hoping the books could fill the gap left by the show’s cancellation, you’ll find they aren’t a direct substitute. (Though most readers actually prefer the books, so they’re still a good read!)
1) Kaos

Despite having talented actors like Jeff Goldblum and Jane McTeer, Netflix decided to cancel Kaos. This is particularly frustrating because the show had a lot of promise. After only one season, many storylines remain unresolved, especially the brewing conflict between Zeus and the other gods. The finale hints at a family betrayal, with Hera secretly contacting someone, and it would have been fascinating to see how that unfolded.
The season finales of Riddy’s and Caeneus leave viewers wondering about the characters’ futures and whether peace between the living and the dead is possible, given the gods’ actions. The ending of Kaos hinted at complex storylines and conflicts, making its cancellation by Netflix particularly disappointing.
