Over its 30-year history, the Power Rangers series is known for bringing back beloved characters. These returns often happen during special anniversary episodes like Forever Red and Legendary Battle, but sometimes they occur organically within a regular season. A great example of this happened 31 years ago, when a famous Power Ranger unexpectedly reappeared – with a surprising twist.
I still remember when Tommy Oliver, the original Green Ranger, came back to Power Rangers! It was February 28th, 1994, and the first part of an episode called “Return of an Old Friend” aired. Even after he lost his powers, everyone loved Tommy – Jason David Frank was so popular – so the show’s creators, Saban, kept finding ways to bring him back. He showed up in part one of the episode, but he didn’t get his powers back right away. When he did regain them in part two, there was a catch: his powers were really unstable and wouldn’t last forever, which made it so exciting to watch because we didn’t know how long he’d be able to stay as the Green Ranger!
How Power Rangers Brought Back The Green Ranger

Tommy’s Green Ranger was key to one of the most memorable storylines in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and the story had several unexpected turns. A major twist occurred in the two-part episode “The Green Candle,” where Tommy lost his Ranger powers.
Tommy briefly appeared in the episode Doomsday, but he didn’t fully return in Return of an Old Friend. In that episode, the Rangers had to give up their Power Coins to rescue their parents, and Tommy was brought in afterward. However, there’s still a glimmer of hope: Jason had kept Tommy’s Dragon Coin, although it had lost its power.
Zordon devises a risky but clever plan to restore Tommy’s powers by transferring his own energy into the Dragon Coin. This comes at a great cost – Zordon risks his own life, as giving too much energy could cause him to disappear completely. There’s also a danger to Tommy, who could be left powerless and vulnerable if the transfer fails. Despite these risks, Tommy agrees, and he successfully recovers the Dragon Dagger and Power Coins just before the energy source is lost. Sadly, this success comes at the price of losing Zordon.
The other Power Rangers had a plan too: they focused their energy from their Power Coins towards Zordon, successfully bringing him back. This surge of energy unexpectedly restored Tommy’s powers as well. While Tommy was thrilled to have his abilities back, Zordon and Alpha warned him that unless they could find a permanent solution, his powers wouldn’t last forever.

Bringing back the Green Ranger made the story more interesting, but the biggest impact was reuniting fans with the character Tommy. He’d become incredibly popular, but because the Green Ranger isn’t a long-term character in the original Japanese series, the show’s creators initially planned for him to leave after a while too.
When the Green Ranger became a fan favorite, the show’s creators had to get creative. They used remaining footage of the original Green Ranger and combined it with new scenes featuring the actor, Tommy. This issue was eventually resolved when Tommy returned as the White Ranger later in the series.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is streaming now on Netflix.
