There are two fantastic post-apocalyptic shows that are considered by many to be among the best science fiction dramas today. They can be challenging to get into at first, but if you stick with them, they become truly unforgettable examples of the genre.

Many TV shows set after the end of the world start the same way. They usually open with scenes of a destroyed world, leaving the cause of the disaster a mystery. Some shows begin by showing the disaster itself, then focus on how the people who survived are trying to live and rebuild.

I’ve been watching a lot of post-apocalyptic shows lately, and these two started out feeling pretty familiar – hitting all the usual story points at the beginning. But honestly, they quickly surprised me. They weren’t flashy, but they built these really powerful, emotionally resonant dramas that really stuck with me, and I think they’re a cut above most of what’s out there in the genre.

The Leftovers & Station Eleven Are Not Your Conventional Post-Apocalyptic Shows

Most stories about the end of the world focus on how people die and try to survive. These stories usually have a single big threat, like a monster or a powerful enemy. But the show Station Eleven is different. It suggests that simply staying alive isn’t enough – keeping art, culture, and memories alive is just as vital as having basic necessities like food and water.

Like Station Eleven, the show The Leftovers centers on the aftermath of a massive, unexplained event – in this case, the sudden disappearance of 2% of the world’s population. Instead of trying to explain why this happened, the story focuses on the emotional and psychological impact on the 98% who remain.

Both shows take their time developing characters and exploring how people heal and find peace, which can make them hard to get into at first. The Leftovers especially starts off feeling very depressing because its characters seem unable to move past their grief.

Both Station Eleven and this other show use a non-linear storytelling approach, jumping between different time periods which can be confusing. They also don’t explain everything directly, instead relying on viewers to connect with the characters’ emotions and notice the small details that influence their choices.

I’ve been thinking about shows that really stick with you, and honestly, both The Leftovers and Station Eleven are prime examples. They both start a little rough, pulling you through some seriously heavy stuff, but trust me, they’re worth it. Around the middle of each series, they completely shift gears in the best way possible, and that’s what elevates them to being some of the most amazing shows in this genre, in my opinion.

We Need More Shows Like Station Eleven & The Leftovers

Because streaming shows need to grab viewers quickly and people tend to have shorter attention spans, most post-apocalyptic series offer immediate action and stick to familiar storylines right away. Unlike shows like The Leftovers and Station Eleven, they generally don’t try to push boundaries or make audiences feel uneasy.

A lot of TV shows are made in a way that doesn’t require your full attention – you can easily watch them while scrolling on your phone. But that wouldn’t work with shows like The Leftovers and Station Eleven. Those shows are so detailed and carefully crafted that you need to pay attention to everything to understand what’s happening.

Shows like Silo, Fallout, and The Last of Us are still enjoyable, but the post-apocalyptic sci-fi genre would benefit from more originality, similar to what we saw in The Leftovers and Station Eleven.
