Ice skating is really popular right now! Between the hit HBO Max series Heated Rivalry and the thrilling figure skating events at the Milano Cortina Olympics – especially Alysa Liu’s inspiring return and gold medal – many people are becoming fans of ice sports, or at least enjoying shows and movies about them. Now that the Olympics have ended and fans of Heated Rivalry are waiting for the next season, a new movie is coming to streaming services just in time to fill the void.
I’m so excited to hear that The Cutting Edge, written by the same person behind Andor, is coming to Tubi! If you enjoyed Heated Rivalry and love figure skating, you absolutely have to check it out. It’s a classic! The story follows Kate, a demanding figure skater, who has to team up with an injured hockey player, Doug, after her original partner leaves. It wasn’t a critical darling when it came out in 1992, but it’s got a huge fanbase – and I’m definitely one of them! It’ll be available on March 1st.
The Cutting Edge Has a Surprising Parallel to One U.S. Olympic Figure Skater’s Story (Just Not How You’d Expect)
The Cutting Edge is an enjoyable movie, though it’s a bit cheesy at times. It requires viewers to overlook some unrealistic details, especially regarding the transition from hockey to figure skating – Doug’s injury and the very different skating techniques used in each sport are points that strain believability. The famous “toe pick” scene perfectly illustrates this. However, the likable characters and strong performances from Kelly and Sweeney help you easily get past these issues and enjoy the film.
What’s particularly fascinating about the movie The Cutting Edge today, 34 years after it came out, is how similar the character Kelly’s journey is to that of Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu. Liu’s recent gold medal win is even more remarkable considering her inspiring comeback. She stepped away from figure skating in 2022 at just 16, after the Winter Olympics, wanting a more typical teenage experience. Everyone was surprised when she decided to return in 2024, but this time she was doing it on her own terms.
Interestingly, Kelly Rutherford made a similar choice to prioritize family, just like her character in The Cutting Edge. After starring as Karen Roe on One Tree Hill, she decided to take a break from acting to focus on her children. Now, she’s starting to act more again, recently appearing in the Hallmark movie Love of the Irish. It’s a compelling connection that might make revisiting this ’90s film on Tubi even more enjoyable.
The Cutting Edge skates onto Tubi March 1st.
