Wolverine gradually became the most popular member of the X-Men throughout the 1970s. By the 1980s, he surpassed all other Marvel heroes in fame – with Spider-Man being the only exception – and has remained incredibly popular ever since. He’s been a key member of nearly every major Marvel team, led multiple ongoing comic series (often several simultaneously), and appeared in countless limited series and one-off issues. His popularity has expanded beyond comics into cartoons, movies, and video games, making him a pop culture icon. Wolverine boasts one of the most complex backstories in comics, and many of his greatest stories skillfully utilize that rich history.
Wolverine has a rich history, and while some classic stories are well-known, others have faded away. Given the current interest in nostalgia and Wolverine’s enduring popularity, it’s a great time to bring back seven forgotten pieces of his past – fans would love it!
7) Shiva
In the 1990s, Wolverine comics began revealing bits of his backstory, including the introduction of Shiva. Shiva was a deadly android created by the Weapon X Program to eliminate anyone investigating the program’s secrets. Wolverine battled one in Wolverine (Vol. 2) #50, and the issue revealed a list of its intended targets. While Sabretooth was attacked, he managed to defeat it, after which Shiva seemingly disappeared. The android and its controlling system are still unaccounted for, and it would be exciting to see them reappear in a future story as a nod to the past.
6) Team X
Team X, featuring Wolverine, Sabretooth, and Maverick, first appeared in X-Men (Vol. 2) #6. During the Cold War, they operated as a covert team for the West, fighting against Soviet forces and clashing with the villain Omega Red. While it’s been established they completed many missions together, very few of those adventures have actually been shown. This era of their history is rich with potential stories, and it’s surprising Marvel hasn’t explored it further.
5) Solem
Wolverine has battled many dangerous foes, but Solem is one often overlooked. First appearing in the 2020 “X of Swords” storyline, Solem is a mutant from Arakko born with naturally adamantium-covered skin, making him incredibly powerful. He became an enemy of Wolverine, cleverly manipulating Logan and leading to several conflicts. Solem was positioned as a significant future threat for Wolverine, and remains at large, poised to reappear. He’s a versatile villain who could feature in numerous stories and deserves more recognition.
4) Weapon Plus
The New X-Men comic series significantly changed the X-Men, and it introduced a fresh take on Wolverine’s backstory. This involved ‘Weapon Plus,’ the evolved form of the original Weapon X program, which created increasingly powerful mutant weapons through advanced genetic and time manipulation. While elements of Weapon X have appeared in various stories, it’s not often the central focus of Wolverine’s individual adventures. Though Weapon X stories have been told many times, the Weapon Plus concept offers opportunities for new narratives that can explore similar themes without repeating old plots.
3) Wolverine as the Horseman of Death
As we headed into the new millennium, the X-Men comics were gearing up for a massive storyline involving Apocalypse. Then, a new version of Death showed up in Astonishing X-Men, and shockingly, it killed Wolverine! The twist? It turned out that ‘Death’ was actually Logan himself, snatched by the Skrulls while the X-Men were lost in time and handed over to Apocalypse. He spent a little while as one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen, and honestly, it’s a period that’s been surprisingly unexplored. We’ve gotten almost no flashbacks to his time as Death, which feels like a missed opportunity – I’d love to see an entire adventure focusing on that era, because Logan was clearly a powerful force for Apocalypse.
2) The Gweilo
Wolverine has spent a lot of time in the shadowy world of black ops and has encountered many dangerous assassins. The most frightening he ever faced was Roddy McLeish, a Scottish killer nicknamed the White Ghost (or Gweilo by the Chinese). McLeish was incredibly skilled at finding ways to eliminate anyone, and he was one of the few people who genuinely scared Logan. They eventually fought, and Wolverine narrowly defeated and killed the mercenary. While their battle is known, their history together remains a mystery, and it would be compelling to explore their past encounters.
1) The Feral Mutation Years
Marvel frequently revisits classic storylines, especially those from the ’90s X-Men, often through limited-run series designed to evoke nostalgia. We’ve seen this with Wolverine, with stories revisiting his time as Patch, his adventures in Madripoor with Captain America and Black Widow, and a past conflict with Mister Sinister and the Marauders. However, one period deserves a return that it hasn’t gotten: the era when Wolverine’s feral, animalistic side was most prominent. This ran roughly from issues #91 to #118 of Wolverine (Vol. 2), a period largely overlooked until it was somewhat addressed in issue #145. There’s a wealth of exciting stories from this time that creators could explore, offering plenty of opportunities for compelling Logan narratives.
