IMAX’s Dune 3 Decision Just Reshaped 2026’s Biggest Box Office Battle

Both “Dune: Part Two” and “Wonka” are scheduled to be released on December 18th, setting up a potential showdown at the box office. Despite concerns about a date conflict, neither film has changed its plans, meaning moviegoers will have to decide which one to see first.

Although the main competition isn’t for another nine months, Dune has already gained an advantage over the new Marvel crossover film. Marvel movies usually open to huge numbers, but Doomsday might face a tough challenge trying to outperform it.

Dune 3 Just Won a Battle in the Box Office War Against Avengers: Doomsday

When Dune: Part Three premieres on December 18th, it will be shown exclusively in all IMAX theaters across the United States. For the first three weeks after its release, no other movie – including Avengers: Doomsday – will be available in IMAX format domestically.

As a huge movie fan, I’ve definitely noticed how important premium formats are these days. Big event films really rely on things like IMAX screenings now. Those pricier tickets actually make up a significant chunk of a movie’s total earnings, especially in those first few weeks when everyone’s rushing to see it. With no other major films competing for that premium experience right now, I think Dune is going to get a fantastic start at the box office.

Unlike some films, Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be significantly impacted by a lack of IMAX screenings. Marvel movies depend on the higher revenue from IMAX tickets to help cover their massive production costs. For example, Avengers: Endgame made $91.5 million during its opening weekend and another $36.7 million from IMAX showings the following weekend. That means Endgame earned over $120 million from IMAX alone in just two weekends.

While $120 million is a small portion of the $2 billion Endgame earned overall, it’s still a significant amount of money. For most films, that sum would be enough to determine success or failure in theaters. However, because Doomsday didn’t have IMAX showings for its first three weeks, its box office results might be lower than expected.

Avengers: Doomsday Needs IMAX Screenings More Than Dune

The movie had a strong start, performing well for its first three weekends. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t the automatic box office success it used to be. Since Avengers: Endgame seven years ago, Marvel films haven’t consistently earned as much money, and a new release isn’t a guaranteed hit anymore. Even the Avengers franchise might be affected by this changing trend.

There’s been criticism of the movie Doomsday due to a few questionable choices, notably the casting of the former Iron Man actor. As a result, many fans aren’t expecting much from the new Avengers film. While a movie’s success isn’t solely measured by box office numbers, they definitely influence how it’s perceived.

Everyone will naturally compare the box office numbers for Avengers: Doomsday to those of Endgame. Even though Doomsday might be starting at a disadvantage, the focus will be on how much less money it makes. This comparison isn’t necessarily fair, but it’s unavoidable.

Even without IMAX screenings, the film likely wouldn’t have performed much better. Given that Marvel’s popularity has been declining recently, a lower opening weekend was expected. Now, it looks like the difference in opening weekend numbers between this film and previous Marvel releases will be even bigger than anticipated, which could create more negative publicity for the studio.

If Avengers: Doomsday doesn’t perform well in theaters, it could significantly impact future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. Disney might be less inclined to invest heavily in large-scale Marvel events like they have in the past. While the MCU wouldn’t disappear, it likely wouldn’t be as dominant in cinemas. However, Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027 could benefit from less competition, giving Marvel an opportunity to regain box office success, even if Doomsday isn’t a hit.

Who Will Win the “Dunesday” Clash?

On December 17th, two huge movie franchises will be competing for viewers, and everyone’s wondering which one will come out on top. It’s not a simple question, though – both films could be considered successful depending on how you measure it.

As a huge fan, I’m pretty confident Avengers: Doomsday is going to make a lot more money worldwide than Dune: Part Three. The Avengers films have always been massive hits – each one has earned over a billion dollars, and the last two even broke two billion! It’s been seven years since we’ve seen a new Avengers movie, and even if Doomsday isn’t a critical darling, I just can’t see it failing to reach that billion-dollar mark. It’s practically guaranteed to outperform most other films, including the Dune series, in terms of box office numbers.

Unlike Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Dune hasn’t yet reached $1 billion in box office revenue. Dune: Part Two is currently the most successful film in the series, earning $715 million globally (according to The Numbers). While that’s a great achievement, and a potential benchmark for Part Three to exceed, the Dune franchise still lags far behind the Avengers in overall earnings.

Although Doomsday might ultimately make more money overall, Dune is expected to be more profitable for the studio. Doomsday has a reported budget of $450 to $500 million, meaning it needs to earn a huge amount just to cover its costs. Dune, with a budget closer to $200 million – similar to previous installments – will likely see a greater percentage of its earnings go directly to the studio, even if its total box office revenue is lower than Doomsday‘s.

The films’ best chance for success lies in a “Barbenheimer”-like scenario, where people want to see both of them instead of picking just one. This could lead to strong box office numbers for both. While it’s hard to predict how excited fans will be, the most hopeful outlook suggests that both Dune and Avengers could be huge hits.

December is shaping up to be a huge month for movies, with two major releases going head-to-head: Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three. While fans are excited about both, they’re likely to be seen as rivals at the box office. Currently, with nine months before they hit theaters, Dune seems to have a stronger outlook than Avengers.

Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday will both hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
