Jason Statham movies aren’t known for being groundbreaking. Films like The Meg feel like lower-budget versions of classics like Jaws, The Italian Job essentially retreads the same ground as the original, and even his grittier action films, such as The Transporter, borrow heavily from movies like The Equalizer. However, his latest film, which clearly takes inspiration from another popular action movie, is surprisingly good and has recently found a new audience on streaming platforms.
Jason Statham teamed up with the director of Suicide Squad, David Ayer, in 2024 for The Beekeeper, an action film clearly inspired by John Wick. Statham plays a former hitman pulled back into action when someone he cares about is harmed by the arrogant son of a billionaire. He’ll stop at nothing to get revenge, and while it shares similarities with many of Statham’s other films, you can now watch The Beekeeper streaming on Peacock.
I really enjoyed watching Jason Statham as Adam Clay – seriously, he played the most convincingly British-American special ops guy I’ve ever seen! The movie also had a great supporting cast, including Josh Hutcherson as the spoiled Millennial, Derek Danforth, plus Emmy Raver-Lampman, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Michael Epp, and the always fantastic Jeremy Irons. They all brought something special to the film.
‘The Beekeeper’ Is Just ‘John Wick’ With Bee Puns
Despite sounding like a low-budget horror film, The Beekeeper is actually one of Jason Statham’s strongest action movies in recent years. It definitely borrows heavily from John Wick, but it strikes a good balance – it doesn’t take itself too seriously while still fully committing to its wild story, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable.
True to form, Jason Statham spends most of the movie shooting villains, sneaking around, and delivering plenty of impressive kicks. But when he’s not in action, the film relies heavily on bee-related puns and jokes, like “To bee or not to bee,” “I need to take care of the hive,” and the particularly memorable line, “Sometimes when the hive’s out of balance… You have to replace the queen.”
I have to say, everyone was really talking about The Beekeeper after it came out. Critics seemed to like it well enough – it’s sitting at 71% on Rotten Tomatoes – but honestly, the audience reaction was the biggest surprise. People loved it, giving it a fantastic 92% rating. It’s always great when a movie connects with viewers like that!
‘The Beekeeper’ Is Getting a Sequel… Because, Of Course, It Is

Following the success of The Beekeeper, Jason Statham is reprising his role in a sequel. Timo Tjahjanto is directing, and while the film is progressing well, its release date—January 15, 2027—is a bit far off. The first movie, a surprise hit in 2024, earned $162 million worldwide. Now that audiences are familiar with the series, The Beekeeper 2 is predicted to be even more popular and earn significantly more at the box office.
