The film KPop Demon Hunters features the popular K-pop group HUNTR/X, and while it’s set in the present day, it mainly serves as an introduction to the group and their world. It doesn’t tell the complete backstory of each member, but we do learn some details through the beginning of the film and a companion art book released by Netflix. We’ve gathered all the information available about the HUNTR/X members’ lives before the events of the movie in one place.
The story of KPop Demon Hunters opens with a vibrant concert scene titled How It’s Done. While the beginning focuses on the present, we soon learn about the characters’ lives before joining HUNTR/X. The story provides the most in-depth look at Rumi’s past, so let’s begin with the lead singer’s journey.
Rumi’s Story is the Heart of the Franchise

The movie focuses on Rumi’s story, quickly revealing she’s half-human, half-demon – a cambion. While her father’s identity remains a mystery, we learn he’s the demonic parent, as her mother was Mi-yeong, a former member of the famous Sunlight Sisters. Sadly, Mi-yeong passed away shortly after Rumi was born, and Rumi’s father has remained absent from her life, as far as we know.
Rumi was placed in the care of Celine, a friend of Mi-yeong and another member of the Sunlight Sisters. Celine raised Rumi, teaching her both music and fighting skills. However, she also strongly encouraged Rumi to conceal her demonic heritage and her scars, a secret that nearly tears the group apart later in the film. Despite this, Celine played a key role in establishing HUNTR/X and recruiting Rumi’s close friends, Mira and Zoey, to join.
Mira Is Still Mostly A Mystery

The movie and art book provided a lot of background on Rumi’s life before the HUNTR/X events, but Mira is very different. The film immediately shows she’s tough and resourceful, which aligns with the little we see of her upbringing.
Mira is often seen as the rebel of her family, and her song “Golden” hints at this, with lyrics like, “They called me a problem child because I was too free-spirited, but now that’s how I make a living, endlessly on stage.” It’s also clear she’s incredibly driven and loyal, traits that probably stem from a difficult or unknown past.
Zoey Was Torn Between Two Lives

I’ve been following Zoey’s story, and while she’s a really cheerful and approachable person – not as enigmatic as Mira – there’s still a lot we don’t know about her life before she joined HUNTR/X. I learned she was born in South Korea, but she spent most of her childhood growing up in Burbank, California. It’s actually really interesting – she touches on this feeling of being caught between two worlds, Korea and the US, in one of her lines, and it reminds me of the themes in Mira’s story too.
In her song “Golden,” Zoey sings about living two different lives and struggling to find her own identity, a clear reference to growing up between Korea and the United States. This feeling of being pulled in two directions could also relate to her experiences in school, where she balanced being a student with pursuing her dream of becoming a rapper. Even then, she was writing songs and lyrics, but faced more negativity than encouragement.
Another possibility is that Zoey’s song refers to her experiences growing up between Korea and the United States. While it could simply mean she moved from Korea to Burbank, some fans believe her parents are divorced. This would add a new layer to the lyrics, suggesting she was dividing her time between both parents’ homes.
There’s no official confirmation yet, so it’s currently just speculation. However, Zoey’s backstory would be a fantastic addition to a future installment, as would exploring Mira’s, particularly since Rumi received so much focus in the first film.
KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netflix.
