7 Most Powerful Superheroes the Punisher Has Defeated

The Punisher is one of Marvel’s most famous and brutal anti-heroes. After the mafia murdered his family, former marine Frank Castle gave up his old life and became a relentless force against criminals. Relying on his military skills, determination, and a vast arsenal of weapons, he’s taken the lives of countless criminals. He’s teamed up with other heroes on many occasions and will appear in both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again this year. Because he’s a heavily armed vigilante, the Punisher frequently clashes with superheroes who want to bring him to justice for his actions. However, despite numerous attempts, heroes have never been able to defeat him.

The Punisher isn’t bound by rules against killing, making him a dangerous and effective fighter against both heroes and villains. Despite being ‘just’ a highly trained ex-soldier with weapons, he consistently surprises everyone by being more powerful than many of Marvel’s strongest characters.

7) Daredevil

The Punisher and Daredevil are known for their complicated relationship, often shifting between teamwork and conflict. In The Punisher #3, the Punisher directly challenges Daredevil’s strong moral beliefs. While the Punisher is tracking a dangerous criminal, Daredevil intervenes to stop him. The Punisher cleverly overpowers Daredevil by using loud noises, which Daredevil is vulnerable to. When Daredevil wakes up, he’s restrained and given a gun. The Punisher presents him with a cruel choice: shoot and kill the Punisher to save the criminal, or allow the Punisher to kill the criminal. Daredevil ultimately pulls the trigger, only to discover the gun is empty. After making Daredevil compromise his principles, the Punisher then kills the criminal himself.

6) Deadpool

Deadpool, like the Punisher, is a Marvel anti-hero known for using guns, so they’ve clashed a few times. Despite Deadpool’s ability to heal quickly, he was clearly defeated in Deadpool vs. Punisher #1. The conflict began when the Punisher targeted one of Deadpool’s associates, nicknamed the Bank, leading to a fierce gun battle. After an explosion seemingly killed the Bank’s family, Deadpool wrongly blamed the Punisher and sought revenge. However, the Punisher ambushed Deadpool at his hideout, shooting him in the head. Though Deadpool survived, it was a decisive loss.

5) Wolverine

It’s rare to see a writer so clearly dislike one of their characters, but Garth Ennis’ portrayal of Wolverine in Punisher #16-17 is a prime example. The story involves the Punisher and Wolverine investigating a series of gruesome dismemberments, each suspecting the other. This leads to a brutal fight where the Punisher shockingly shoots Wolverine’s face with a shotgun. Despite this, they briefly team up when attacked by the actual criminals. During a chase, the Punisher deliberately shoots Wolverine in the groin to distract the gang, allowing them to capture him. Though the Punisher later rescues Wolverine, the understandably enraged mutant still wants revenge. To buy some time for Wolverine to cool down, the Punisher resorts to flattening him with a steamroller.

4) Spider-Man

The Punisher first appeared as a villain for Spider-Man. Because Spider-Man believes in doing what’s right, and the Punisher uses extreme violence to fight crime, they’ve often found themselves at odds and even fighting each other. However, in Giant-Sized Spider-Man #4, Spider-Man briefly teamed up with the Punisher to rescue hostages. The alliance fell apart when Spider-Man discovered the Punisher was willing to let a hostage die in order to track down some terrorists, which made Spider-Man furious. Spider-Man initially overpowered the Punisher with his strength and speed, but the Punisher eventually knocked him unconscious with a tranquilizer gun. After waking up several hours later, Spider-Man and the Punisher put aside their differences and worked together to stop the terrorists.

3) Luke Cage and Iron Fist

Luke Cage and Iron Fist, known as the Heroes for Hire, are among Marvel’s most famous street-level crimefighters. Luke Cage’s incredibly durable skin and Iron Fist’s powerful martial arts skills make them a formidable team. In The Punisher #2, the Punisher encountered them while trying to escape the police. While bullets couldn’t harm Luke Cage, the Punisher managed to incapacitate him by shoving a grenade down his shirt. This knocked Luke Cage down, and Iron Fist then attacked the Punisher. However, the Punisher cleverly defeated both heroes at once by shooting at a car’s gas tank after placing a grenade inside. The resulting explosion launched the Heroes for Hire backwards, allowing the Punisher to make his escape.

2) Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider is a powerful and intimidating hero, known and feared by both angels and demons. It was inevitable that he would eventually cross paths with the Punisher, given his mission to punish the guilty. In Thunderbolts #29, the Punisher gathered magical weapons to protect himself, but Ghost Rider still managed to inflict his devastating Penance Stare – a punishment that forces the victim to feel the pain they’ve caused others. Surprisingly, the Penance Stare didn’t work on the Punisher, who apparently felt no remorse. While this doesn’t align with how the Stare usually functions, it created an opportunity for the Punisher to trap Ghost Rider with his own chains and banish him to Hell.

1) Avengers

The Avengers truly live up to their reputation as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, boasting some of Marvel’s most powerful characters. Even when the Punisher gained the power of a War Machine suit, facing twelve Avengers seemed like a losing battle. The team sent to stop him included incredibly strong heroes like Captain Marvel, the Thing, Hercules, and Luke Cage, as well as others like Spider-Man, Cannonball, and U.S. Agent. Surprisingly, the Punisher’s suit allowed him to knock out and stun the Avengers despite being attacked by all of them at once. He then blew up the warehouse to create a distraction and escape while they were recovering from the explosion.
