Yellowstone’s Biggest Challenger Officially Drops in 2026, And it’s the Classic Western Revival Fans Need

If you enjoy Westerns, you probably love Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, with Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, and Kelly Reilly. But if you’re searching for a new Western to get hooked on – one that mixes the feel of classic Westerns with the excitement of superheroes – check out DC Comics’ latest series.

Long before the TV show Yellowstone and the Duttons, there was Jonah Hex, a tough, cowboy anti-hero who first appeared in the comic book All-Star Western #10 back in 1972.

The popular anti-hero is getting their own new comic book series, and it’s expected to quickly become a favorite for fans of Westerns and superhero stories. DC Comics legend Scott Snyder has officially confirmed the series, with more details coming as part of DC’s Next Level launch.

Jonah Hex Claims Brand-New Solo Series Ahead of DC’s Next Level Initiative

Scott Snyder Teases a Bold, New Era for DC’s Gun-Slinging Anti-Hero

DC’s Next Level is the next step in the DC ALL IN initiative, which started with the DC All In Special and the launch of the Absolute Universe. This new phase will introduce both new limited-run series and ongoing titles. One of the upcoming series announced by Snyder in his Substack newsletter (#255) is a solo title featuring the character Jonah Hex.

In his newsletter, Snyder teased the following:

I’m so excited for you to check out these books! They’re all incredibly ambitious and bold, especially titles like Lobo and Deathstroke. We’ve really gone all-out with epic stories. Batwoman, written by Greg Rucka and Dani, is fantastic, and Zatanna gets a major upgrade. We’ve also got Firestorm, Shadow of the Bat, and so many other great titles. Plus, there’s a ton more on the way that we can’t wait to share!

Right now, the only news about the new series is that Jonah Hex is getting his own title again. We don’t yet know who will be working on the book, how many issues to expect, or when the first issue will come out. But even just knowing it’s happening is great news!

As a DC fan for years, I’ve always loved Jonah Hex, but I’ve also felt like he never quite got the spotlight he deserved. So, I was really surprised – and thrilled! – to hear he’s getting his own series. It’s great to hear from the creative team about how they’re looking at characters like Hex and giving them a chance to shine. It shows they’re willing to take risks and explore some of DC’s hidden gems.

After announcing the Jonah Hex project, Zack Snyder explained that these kinds of stories come to life because fans support unique and unconventional ideas. He believes the willingness of DC fans to try lesser-known characters has made it possible for a hero like the tough, old-west anti-hero Jonah Hex to get his own series. Now, fans of shows like Yellowstone, will you give this gritty western character a chance?
