Bungie has shared details about how seasons will work in their new extraction shooter, Marathon. What players do in the game’s universe, Tau Ceti, will actually matter and change things. Each season will bring fresh content like new character customizations (‘Runner Shells’), areas to explore, in-game happenings, and equipment—and it will all be available to every player for free. You won’t need to buy any additional downloadable content to access these updates, though cosmetic items will still be available for purchase.
If you’ve played other games where you collect items and then lose them when a new season starts – like many ‘extraction shooter’ games – you’ll find the same thing happens in Marathon. Unfortunately, you can’t change that.
Each season, players begin with absolutely nothing, facing the ever-present danger of death in a world that’s far more dangerous and powerful than they are.
As you play, you’ll finish contracts and improve your faction, which will make your base stronger and unlock better items. It’s not just about finding good loot; it’s about becoming more powerful overall and having more choices in how you play. Eventually, it will be easier to bounce back from setbacks and create the perfect character build.
Okay, so I’ve spent the whole season grinding and finally got all the good stuff, even some extra from that Cryo Archive map! Now I’m supposed to just go wild and use it all before the season ends. But heads up: when the new season drops, everything resets. That means all my gear, my level, and even my progress on Contracts and with the different Factions… it all goes back to zero. Time to start fresh!
Good news! Everything you’ve already unlocked – like achievements, cosmetic items, and Codex entries – will still be yours, along with any rewards you get from playing and hitting goals each season. Plus, you’ll have immediate access to Factions, letting you start working on their Contracts and leveling up right away.
The development team explains that seasonal resets keep the game challenging and make finding loot feel rewarding. They also offer a fresh start for both returning and new players, so everyone can jump in and progress together. Each season is a chance to experience new gameplay, content, and discoveries, essentially allowing players to begin a new adventure from scratch.
Marathon will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC starting March 5th. We have more news about future content coming soon, so keep an eye out for updates!
