Since its release last week, Resident Evil Requiem has become a huge hit online, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from both longtime fans and new players. Capcom’s newest game quickly broke sales records, though some players question how long this success will last.
A recent surge in user scores on Metacritic has propelled Resident Evil Requiem to the top spot, briefly surpassing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 from 2025. Although the score has since dropped slightly to 9.4 (compared to Expedition 33‘s 9.5), players are still predicting where the game will ultimately rank in the coming weeks.
Resident Evil Requiem Just Hit A New Review Milestone
Despite some mixed reactions to the recent review score, Resident Evil‘s incredible player numbers show just how popular the release of Requiem has been for horror fans and gamers everywhere.
While Resident Evil Requiem is receiving very positive reviews on Steam and from critics, some players are worried about how easily scores on Metacritic can change. A few are even upset that the game is being so highly rated so quickly after its release, especially since Requiem’s score is based on around 6,000 reviews – much fewer than the 24,000 reviews for Expedition 33.
Some players, like Hossafy, believe the high score is due to a recent tendency to favor new releases. Others criticize Metacritic because you don’t need to actually own a game to write a review, leading them to question whether the game truly deserves the top spot, even if it’s well-made. Phrosnite noted that the game E33 also launched with a very high score of 9.7, but that score decreased to 9.5 as more reviews came in.
Fans Aren’t Convinced Of Requiem’s Staying Power
It’s likely Resident Evil Requiem will continue to receive very positive reviews even after the initial excitement dies down, though its recent release is probably a major reason for the current high scores.
Okay, so I think Requiem is a seriously polished horror game and will definitely be remembered as one of the best. But honestly, I’m not sure it’ll reach the same level of popularity as games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 or even Metal Gear Solid. It’s also funny because it’s currently competing with… Cory in the House on the DS for good Metacritic scores! People have been jokingly inflating that game’s score for months, and it’s actually at a 9.3 right now, so Requiem has its work cut out for it!
While Resident Evil Requiem currently has a fantastic score of 9.4 on Metacritic, it’s likely the game’s ranking might decrease over time, especially with the anticipated release of Resident Evil 10 approaching.
