Guy Ritchie, the director behind the popular Sherlock Holmes movies from 2009 and 2011, is revisiting the world of Sherlock Holmes with a new Prime Video series called Young Sherlock. Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays the young detective in the show.
The show follows a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes as he meets a new companion who will eventually become his greatest enemy, James Moriarty.
Right now, they’ve really become partners, digging into a case that quickly explodes into a worldwide conspiracy. It all builds to this incredible, explosive climax that completely changes Sherlock’s life, and honestly, it’s a game-changer for him.
I just finished binging all eight episodes, and I’m already wondering – is this show an adaptation of a book, or maybe even a whole series? I’m always curious about the source material!

Is Young Sherlock based on a book?

It’s complicated. While the show Young Sherlock draws inspiration from Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes book series, it’s not a direct adaptation. The show largely tells an original story and features Sherlock investigating cases when he’s older than in the books.
While the books start with Sherlock being aged 14, in the series he is 19 at the start of the run.
All of the novels were written by Andrew Lane, a writer also known for his work on Doctor Who and Torchwood books and audio dramas.
Over the years, there have been several connections between the shows Doctor Who and Sherlock. Notably, the modern Sherlock series on the BBC was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, both of whom also wrote episodes for Doctor Who.
I’ve noticed a familiar hand at work on this series – Steve Thompson, who’s penned episodes for both Doctor Who and previous Sherlock Holmes adaptations, is back! He didn’t just write for Young Sherlock though – he also stepped into an executive producer role, which explains the consistently solid storytelling. It’s great to see him juggling both writing and overseeing the bigger picture.
How many books are there in the Young Sherlock Holmes series?

There are eight novels in the Young Sherlock Holmes series in total.
They were released between 2010 and 2015.
