While Resident Evil Requiem featured a new character alongside Leon S. Kennedy, it seems developers originally planned for a larger team-up of familiar faces. Industry insider DuskGolem shared (through now-deleted social media posts discovered by Reddit user AashyLarry) that data miners found evidence of a third playable character who would have temporarily joined either Grace Ashcroft or Leon.
The game files contain data labeled “Jill_Support,” suggesting that Jill Valentine was initially intended to appear in Resident Evil Requiem. It appears she was later removed from the game’s programming, leaving a placeholder for a specific cutscene. The game’s data also hints at plans for Ada Wong, car-focused gameplay, and missions that were cut from the final game very late in the development process.
According to data analysts, the game’s code shows evidence that a character named Jill was originally planned to appear in certain cutscenes, like the fight before the final boss. They discovered ‘spawn points’ for Jill alongside the main character, but these were ultimately removed from the game, leaving behind empty spaces in the code where she would have been.
This finding supports earlier rumors from November 2024 that suggested the next Resident Evil game, potentially titled Resident Evil Requiem, would feature a team-up between Leon and Jill. Those rumors also hinted at the return of Chris Redfield and Barry Burton, with some speculation that Rose Winters from Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose might also play a role.
Back in 2024, there were rumors that Capcom was planning an open-world game for Resident Evil Requiem. But the final game didn’t end up being open-world; instead, it largely stuck to the traditional Resident Evil gameplay style.
Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem has been a huge success, selling over 5 million copies in its first week across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. This makes it the fastest-selling Resident Evil game yet, surpassing the launch sales of Resident Evil 6 (4.5 million copies), as well as the Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake.
A new report from Dusk Golem suggests Capcom will be reviewing the performance of Resident Evil games—including Requiem, the 4 Remake, and the anticipated Code: Veronica remake—to help plan the franchise’s future. Since the Code: Veronica remake is currently projected for an early 2027 release, this internal discussion at Capcom is likely to take place sometime in the latter half of next year.
I just finished reading our review of Resident Evil Requiem, and seriously, we gave it a 9 out of 10! If you’re curious, you should definitely check it out. We also talked a lot about how amazing they portrayed Raccoon City, and honestly, the combat is just incredible – brutal, but brilliantly done.
