Scream 7’s Alternate Ending Revealed, & It Had the Stu Macher Twist Fans Have Theorized for 30 Years

While Scream 7 hasn’t wowed critics, it’s had a hugely successful opening weekend, becoming the highest-grossing premiere in the Scream series with over $97 million earned worldwide. Many factors contributed to this success, including the return of Matthew Lillard as Stu Macher. Director Kevin Williamson recently revealed that there was a different ending considered for the film, one that could have dramatically changed the direction of the franchise.

Please be warned: this article contains spoilers for Scream 7. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, proceed with caution! As fans know, Matthew Lillard returned as Stu Macher, a killer from the original Scream, in a surprising twist. While Stu didn’t literally come back from the dead, the new killers used artificial intelligence to convincingly impersonate him. In a recent interview with Esquire, director Christopher Williamson explained that the idea for this twist came from writer Guy Busick. Williamson initially wondered how the AI concept would work and if audiences would be disappointed that Stu wasn’t truly back. They even filmed scenes both with and without the AI element to see what worked best, wanting to have the best of both worlds.

The Scream 7 Ending That Was Shot

During the interview, Williamson surprisingly shared that the filmmakers actually filmed a scene where Stu Macher survived. Although Macher ultimately remained dead, they had the option to bring him back. He explained that they decided against it because they felt the audience preferred his death.

Kevin was talking about test audiences when he said they ‘wanted him dead.’ These viewers saw an alternate ending for Scream 7 that the filmmakers ultimately rejected. They felt it was more believable and realistic for the character to die, explaining, “It makes more sense. It’s more real. If he’s alive, that’s a big stretch. We live in a world now where with fake AI, we know that’s possible.” In the movie, the Ghostface killers used AI – not just with Stu, but with several past killers and victims – to mess with Sydney’s mind. Although Scream 8 hasn’t been officially announced, the use of AI now allows the possibility of bringing dead characters back in future installments.

So, they’ve dropped a new ending for Scream 7, and honestly, I’m really curious what you all think of it. I’ve seen it, and I’m dying to hear your reactions!
