I’m a big Matrix fan, and I recently decided to explore the video games based on the franchise. I remembered playing the pinball game and Path of Neo, but I was surprised to discover there are only four Matrix games in total. Considering how influential and well-suited the series is for gaming, that seems incredibly low. Instead of simply ranking them, I wanted to look closely at what’s been released and explain why we need more Matrix video games.
It’s understandable why there haven’t been many Matrix games. While the first movie was a huge hit, the sequels and the recent Resurrections film weren’t as well-received or profitable. When movies don’t do well, game publishers are hesitant to invest. However, The Matrix is now much bigger than just the original films – it’s a major multimedia franchise with a lot of potential. That’s why we need more than just the four Matrix games that currently exist; there are still plenty of stories to tell.
The Matrix Franchise Needs More Games

Though not widely seen, The Animatrix effectively explained the events leading up to the war between humans and machines. Along with other content like video games, it enriched the world of The Matrix, paving the way for more stories. Instead of retelling the movies or focusing on familiar characters, future games should explore broader aspects of the universe, particularly the significant events and individuals—the ‘Anomalies’—that existed before the time of Neo.
There are four games based on The Matrix that are worth checking out. The first, Enter the Matrix (2003), is an action-adventure game with a story that happens at the same time as The Matrix Reloaded. It includes over an hour of new footage and was directed by the Wachowskis. While not a critical darling, it sold over 5 million copies and expanded the franchise’s story and world. The second game was The Matrix Online, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released in 2005. It also added to the story, but the game’s servers were shut down in 2009.
Following that was The Matrix: Path of Neo, a game where players control Neo through events from the first three films. While it wasn’t a hit and didn’t expand much on the story, it’s not a bad game and serves as a decent tie-in. More recently, in 2021, The Matrix Awakens was released as a playable tech demo to promote The Matrix Resurrections, but it wasn’t a complete game. Those are all the games ever made for The Matrix franchise, and frankly, it leaves fans wanting more. The biggest issue, in my opinion, is that the games rely too heavily on the movies and characters like Neo and Trinity. They need to break away from that formula!
Matrix Games Should Be Wholly Original

The Wachowskis built a fantastic and detailed world with memorable characters and exciting action, which explains why the franchise has so many fans. However, it’s time for the games to forge their own path, separate from the films. I’d love to see new games introduce original characters and explore different time periods within the franchise’s already intricate backstory. While I appreciate the existing movies and games, I’m eager to see something fresh and innovative.
