Movies based on video games are incredibly captivating, perhaps even more so than those based on comic books. It’s unique to see a game you actively play transformed into a film you can simply watch and enjoy. This offers a fresh perspective on well-loved classics, and sometimes even creates iconic movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, and the Resident Evil series. Recently, a popular video game adaptation became available to stream on Tubi, and while critics had mixed reactions, fans absolutely loved it – and are eager for a follow-up.
I was so excited when Uncharted finally hit theaters in 2022! As a fan of the video games, I couldn’t wait to see Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan brought to life on the big screen, and Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg totally delivered. The movie follows their adventure as they race against a ruthless billionaire and a dangerous mercenary to find Magellan’s lost treasure. It was a long time coming – I heard they started working on it way back in 2008! – but it was definitely worth the wait. It was a huge success for Sony, and I was thrilled to be part of the audience that helped make it happen.
Almost Four Years Later, We Still Want that Uncharted Sequel

The movie Uncharted faced some criticism when it came out, as is common with adaptations. A major point of discussion was the casting of Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, with many fans expecting an actor who more closely resembled the older version of the character from the games. There were also concerns about Mark Wahlberg as Sully; some viewers felt he played the character too similarly to a younger Drake and didn’t quite capture Sully’s iconic look, even lacking the mustache for most of the film. Despite the initial debate, the movie proved popular with audiences and grossed over $407 million worldwide.
Talk of a sequel to Uncharted has been ongoing, and Sony Pictures Entertainment officially confirmed in 2024 that one is being made. This is exciting because the first film’s ending left several storylines open, introducing the villain Gabriel Roman and bringing back Nathan’s brother, Sam. While it’s been almost two years since the sequel was announced, it’s still unclear when it will be released or exactly what the story will be. In the meantime, fans can re-enjoy the original Uncharted movie, which is now available to stream for free.
Uncharted is now streaming for free on Tubi.
