The new Yellowstone spin-off, Marshals, has launched successfully, achieving a ratings record for CBS that hadn’t been broken in nearly ten years.
Luke Grimes is back as Kayce Dutton in the first Yellowstone spin-off series to air on regular television. The show begins as Kayce is facing big upheaval in his life. The series has 13 episodes, and the extended premiere has already generated a lot of excitement.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the premiere of Marshals had the largest audience of any new scripted show this season. The first episode, which aired on March 1st, attracted 9.52 million viewers – making it a strong debut for the Yellowstone spinoff.
Without counting shows that aired after NFL games, the premiere of Marshals had the biggest same-day audience for a scripted TV show on network television since FBI premiered on CBS in September 2018 with 10 million viewers. Good news continues for the drama focusing on Kayce Dutton, as 99% of viewers who watched the first episode also tuned in for the second.
The premiere episode, penned by creator Spencer Hudnut and directed by Greg Yaitanes, drew more viewers than reruns of Yellowstone‘s fifth season premiere on CBS. While it didn’t quite reach the viewership of the Yellowstone launch (16.4 million), it surpassed the numbers for Marshals when including viewers across all platforms where it aired.
Created by the mind behind the Yellowstone series, Taylor Sheridan, Marshals centers on Kayce, who leaves his family’s ranch to become a U.S. Marshal. He uses his skills from growing up as a cowboy and his difficult past to bring criminals to justice throughout Montana. The job challenges him, forcing him to juggle the demands of his work with his family responsibilities and the emotional toll it takes.
As a big fan of the Yellowstone universe, I was excited to see some familiar actors popping up in the cast of Marshals! Alongside Taylor Sheridan’s usual crew, we’ve got Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty, and the always fantastic Gil Birmingham joining the team. It’s great to see some of those Yellowstone faces continuing the story in this new series.
| Y: Marshals Cast Member | Character | Notes |

The new series is already facing scrutiny, particularly regarding its handling of a significant Yellowstone character linked to Kayce. There’s also discussion about whether characters from Marshals will appear in the planned Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler spinoff on Paramount+.
We don’t have answers on everything just yet, but it looks like this new Yellowstone spinoff is doing really well! It feels like it could easily last for several seasons and really find its own voice, especially as we follow Kayce’s story moving forward. I’m excited to see where it goes!
Marshals airs Sundays at 8 PM ET on CBS
