How Harry Styles is Honoring Liam Payne One Year After His Death

Harry Styles is holding on to all his memories with Liam Payne.

Just over a year after the passing of his One Direction bandmate in October 2024, Harry openly shared his feelings about his loss.

It really hit me hard losing a friend. I was telling Zayn Lowe in an interview recently how tough it is, especially when that person felt so much like a kindred spirit. It’s like I lost someone who was genuinely good at heart and just striving to be their best, and that’s incredibly painful.

Ever since his friend Liam tragically died in a fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina at age 31, Harry has consistently looked for ways to remember and celebrate his life.

He described it as a pivotal moment where he really thought about his future and what he wanted out of life. He believes the best way to remember and honor friends who have died is to live life to the fullest.

Overall, Harry will always remember Liam as a “super special person.”

The singer of “Aperture,” who spent five years in the band with Liam, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson, also talked about how difficult it was to deal with his sadness publicly.

You know, it’s still a bit difficult for me to even talk about this, if I’m being honest. After my father passed away, I really wrestled with how odd it felt to share my grief with so many people – like a part of it belonged to them, too. It was a strange feeling to navigate, and something I had to really process.

He explained he was deeply affected by his friend’s death. It felt strange to him that others seemed to expect him to express his grief in a certain way, as if acknowledging their expectations meant he wasn’t truly feeling it.

Harry spoke out soon after Louis shared his continued grief over the loss of Liam. Louis had previously experienced the deaths of his mother in 2016 and sister in 2019, but explained that this loss still felt profoundly difficult.

In an interview with The Independent published on October 18th, Louis shared that he’d mistakenly believed his prior experience with loss would help him cope. He explained, “I thought because I’d unfortunately dealt with grief before, I’d be better prepared, but it didn’t make things any easier.”

He added, “It’s something I’ll never really accept, I don’t think.”
