Despite facing cancellation, the popular animated series Star Trek: Prodigy has earned its second Emmy Award. Season 2 of the show won for Outstanding Background Design at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, recognizing the work of artist Bastien Grivet.
Star Trek: Prodigy received nominations for Kate Mulgrew’s voice acting as both the real and holographic versions of Captain Janeway, and for the writing in the first part of the episode, “The Devourer of All Things.”
Star Trek: Prodigy received an award for its exceptional production design in animation. The show had also been nominated for awards recognizing its sound mixing and editing.
Despite the show receiving awards, Star Trek: Prodigy was still cancelled, but fans continue to hope it will be picked up by a different streaming platform.
Star Trek: Prodigy Is Star Trek’s Most Underappreciated Show
Production of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 was underway when the show initially aired in 2024. Unfortunately, the show was later cancelled and removed from the streaming platform in late 2025.
As much as I wish I could just binge-watch it on a streaming service, that’s not happening – at least not with a subscription. You can still rent or buy it digitally, thankfully. But the really good news for collectors like me is that both seasons are out on Blu-ray and DVD! They split the first season into two sets, but the second season is thankfully all in one complete package, which is perfect.
Star Trek: Prodigy Was a First for Star Trek
Star Trek: Prodigy took a different approach to the Star Trek formula. Rather than following the adventures of a seasoned Starfleet crew, the show centers on a group of young misfits who discover an abandoned Starfleet ship called the Protostar. They use the ship to escape from a work camp and begin a journey of their own.
The new season features some beloved characters from past Star Trek series. Kate Mulgrew returns as Captain Kathryn Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager, alongside Robert Beltram as Chakotay. Robert Picardo also reprises his role as the Doctor from Voyager, and Wil Wheaton joins the cast as Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
The main voice actors in Star Trek: Prodigy are Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Jason Mantzoukas, Angus Imrie, Rylee Alazraqui, and Dee Bradley Baker, who play the young crew of the Protostar. Jimmi Simpson, John Noble, and Jameela Jamil voice the show’s villains.
