Fans of pirate adventures have a lot to look forward to! In addition to the recent, exciting film The Bluff – which cleverly combines elements of pirate stories and action like John Wick – a classic pirate tale is being adapted into a major new TV series. After over a century, this beloved story is coming to streaming, and it boasts an incredibly talented cast.
Amazon MGM Studios and Paramount+ are teaming up to create a six-part series based on the classic pirate adventure, Treasure Island. The original Treasure Island film, Disney’s first live-action movie, came out in 1950. This new adaptation will star David Oyelowo (known for Selma), Hayley Atwell (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Tomer Capone (The Boys), and Tom Sweet (Great Expectations), according to Variety.

Treasure Island remains a beloved classic, consistently earning high praise. Now, a new adaptation will introduce the story to a fresh audience. The original film is critically acclaimed – it boasts a 100% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 67% audience score – and is celebrated for its faithful adaptation of the novel and its exciting, adventurous spirit.
The cast for the upcoming TV series Treasure Island has been announced! David Oyelowo will star as the famous pirate Long John Silver. Gemma Atwell will play Bess Hawkins, and Callum Huston will be Aaron Graham. Additionally, Leo Capone will portray Billy Bones, and newcomer Finley Sweet will take on the role of Jim Hawkins. The series is being created for television by Robert Murphy (known for Vera) and directed by Jeremy Lovering (Slow Horses), William McGregor (Lockwood & Co), and Paul Walker (Shameless). Mark Hedges is producing the show.
Great news! Filming for the series has already begun. It’s a coming-of-age story about Jim Hawkins and his quest after finding a famous treasure map. Along the way, Bess discovers dangerous information, and together they’ll have to navigate tricky waters with Silver and Graham both vying for control.
According to Paramount+’s Cardwell, the new series Treasure Island is a fresh and immersive take on a beloved story. This version of Stevenson’s classic adds emotional complexity and a modern feel. They are excited to collaborate with Playground and MGM+ to share this visually stunning adventure with viewers in the UK, Ireland, the US, and internationally.
MGM+’s new version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’ is a captivating take on the beloved story, blending classic Hollywood style with modern storytelling. The series features a talented cast including David Oyelowo, Hayley Atwell, Jack Huston, Tomer Capone, and Tom Sweet, according to Wright.
The first Treasure Island was a hit with everyone and featured exciting action scenes. While this new version has a great cast, it doesn’t seem to focus much on character development. However, as long as it captures the same adventurous feel as the original, fans will probably enjoy it.
The 1950 film adaptation of Treasure Island featured Robert Newton as Long John Silver, alongside Basil Sydney as Captain Smollett, Bobby Driscoll as Jim Hawkins, Walter Fitzgerald as Squire Trelawney, Finlay Currie as Captain Billy Bones, Geoffrey Keen as Israel Hands, and Ralph Truman as George Merry. The movie was a financial success, earning over $4 million, and led to a sequel in 1954 called Long John Silver, where Robert Newton returned to play the iconic pirate.
Treasure Island currently has no release date.
