EastEnders airs heartbreaking Nigel Bates episode as he leaves Albert Square in early BBC iPlayer release

EastEnders viewers said goodbye to Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) as his character moved into a care home. This difficult decision came as Nigel’s young-onset dementia continued to worsen, marking the end of a beloved character’s time in Walford.

The latest part of the story concluded with a special episode showcasing outstanding acting by Bradley, Gemma Bissix, Steve McFadden, and Karen Henthorn.

Clare Bates and Lexi Pearce quickly arranged a farewell party for Nige after he was released from the hospital and they took him to The Queen Vic for one last drink. Friends and neighbors gathered to offer their support and reminisce about his years on Albert Square.

Tracey (Jane Slaughter) remembered introducing him to his first wife, Debbie (Nicola Duffett). Meanwhile, Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) recounted the time he woke up in a field after Ricky Butcher’s (Sid Owen) bachelor party, convinced he was in France.

It broke my heart to see he still hadn’t remembered Clare. I really worried that their chance to fix things, to get back together, had already passed.

When Phil Mitchell and Julie Bates showed up, they strongly criticized Clare for acting so carelessly, which made her break down crying. Julie went to comfort her, and the two women had a sincere talk where they decided to try and fix things for Phil’s sake.

Julie walked over to Nigel and invited Clare to join their conversation, reminiscing about their shared childhood. Nigel looked up and, recognizing her at last, smiled at Clare.

Time was running short, and they needed to take him to the care home. As he drove away, friends and family lined the streets, clapping to show their support.

Phil and Clare were surprised by the new environment when they brought Nigel inside, and it soon became clear that the change was upsetting him. He became agitated and lashed out, hitting Clare’s lip and yelling at Phil.

Consumed with emotion, Clare raced out and asserted that she’d be in touch to visit again.

Back in the town square, Julie began to cry as she packed her husband’s things. She knew her life had changed forever, and Yolande Trueman (played by Angela Wynter) was there to comfort her.

Yolande promised she wouldn’t be alone, and that their neighbors were already coordinating visits through a group chat to make sure he had company.

Phil, deeply saddened, echoed this feeling. He explained to the caregiver that while Nigel had recovered from his recent bout of pneumonia, his mental state had declined so much that he wasn’t the same person anymore.

My heart ached watching Phil. His carer really encouraged him to prioritize himself, which was a huge relief knowing someone was looking after Nige around the clock. It gave him a little space to process everything, too. Then, he went back into his room, told his best friend how much he loved him, and just…left. It was incredibly sad.

After dealing with some mental health challenges, will Phil be okay now that Nigel has left Albert Square?
