After a break following the 2019 release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars is returning to movie theaters. Lucasfilm is now focusing its storytelling efforts back on the big screen with Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu. The film, directed by Jon Favreau, continues the story of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, following the events of the third season of The Mandalorian. It’s designed to be a much larger, more epic continuation of the popular Disney+ series. Joining the cast is Jeremy Allen White, known for The Bear, who will play a unique villain.
Empire Magazine has given fans the first good look at Rotta the Hutt, a new character voiced by White, in the upcoming season of The Mandalorian & Grogu. The promotional image reveals a striking departure from typical Hutts – this one is muscular, wields crescent-shaped knives, and appears prepared for a fight. Unlike the large, slow, and sedentary Hutts seen in most live-action Star Wars content, Rotta is portrayed as a powerful warrior. With a recent trailer already hinting at a large-scale arena battle between Rotta and Din Djarin, audiences are set to witness a Hutt at the peak of their physical condition for the very first time.
The Introduction of Rotta in The Mandalorian & Grogu Is Already Divisive
The new look for Rotta the Hutt is getting a varied reaction from Star Wars fans online. Many are thrilled to see a warrior Hutt appear in a major movie, something the older Star Wars stories have often explored. These stories showed Hutts as a diverse species, not just slow, criminal bosses. By acknowledging this history, Lucasfilm seems to be breaking away from how Hutts have always been presented in the films. However, some fans believe a strong, athletic Hutt doesn’t fit with the species’ established image. Traditionally, Hutts are intimidating because of their power and control through crime and manipulation, and a muscular warrior feels out of character for them in the movies.
Some fans were disappointed that the digital version of Rotta didn’t look anything like actor Jeremy Allen White. It’s common practice to include an actor’s features in CGI versions of themselves to make the performance more believable, and many feel this was a missed opportunity. Additionally, the decision to give Rotta knives as weapons sparked a lot of jokes, as fans pointed out the contrast between fighting with blades and White’s famous role as a chef constantly chopping ingredients in the show The Bear.
Even though some viewers weren’t thrilled with how he looked, bringing Rotta the Hutt into the story is a big connection between different periods of Star Wars. Rotta first appeared as a baby, nicknamed “Stinky,” in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. By including an adult Rotta in The Mandalorian & Grogu, creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are cleverly using their understanding of the animated series to enrich the current story.
The Mandalorian & Grogu is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 22nd.
