The news that Robert Downey Jr. will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time as the villain Doctor Doom, has sparked a lot of discussion among fans about how it will affect the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. It’s a risky move for the franchise to cast the actor best known as Iron Man as the main villain. Theories abound about how Marvel will explain Doctor Doom looking like Tony Stark, with some suggesting he’s a twisted version of Iron Man from another reality. Interestingly, Marvel Comics actually introduced an evil Iron Man back in March 2003, and this character could serve as inspiration for Doctor Doom’s portrayal in Avengers: Doomsday.
The Marvel comic series Exiles features a team of heroes who travel through alternate universes. In issue #23, they encounter their darker selves, a team called Weapon X. Their latest mission introduces Emperor Stark, a particularly evil version of Iron Man, who is so ruthless he’s become even more villainous than Doctor Doom. This storyline, called “With an Iron Fist,” explores how Stark became this terrifying figure and could influence the portrayal of Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday event.
How Iron Man Became His World’s Doctor Doom

Emperor Stark, a different version of Iron Man, gradually changes into someone resembling Doctor Doom. The story, “With an Iron Fist,” is set on Earth-42777, a bleak future where the age of heroes is over. This Tony Stark began as a hero, but he was ruthless and power-hungry, believing the only way to save the world was to control it. He secretly supported Magneto and the Brotherhood, which led to a devastating war between mutants and humans, causing many deaths. Stark then positioned himself as a savior by publicly defeating Magneto.
Iron Man orchestrated a devastating war that nearly wiped out all superheroes and mutants. Then, he deliberately created a chain of disasters – plagues, famines, and natural catastrophes – and positioned himself as the only one who could fix them, building up his image as a savior. Humanity, broken and deceived, ultimately accepted him as their ruler. However, Doctor Doom challenged Stark’s claim to power, leading to a fierce battle. Stark defeated Doom, even taking his cloak as a trophy, but not before Doom severely disfigured his face.
Emperor Stark, despite concealing his scarred appearance with a holographic illusion, had effectively become a new version of Doctor Doom, ruling the world ruthlessly. But like all Doctor Dooms, his reign didn’t last. When Weapon X arrived on Earth-42777, they offered to help him crush the rebellion led by Black Bolt and Invisible Woman. Secretly, however, Weapon X engineered Stark’s defeat. Black Bolt gave his life to wipe out Stark’s forces, and Invisible Woman ended the tyrant’s life with a fatal blow. Finally, Earth-42777 was freed from the Armored Avenger, who had become the latest incarnation of Doctor Doom.
What Emperor Stark Could Mean for Avengers: Doomsday

Emperor Stark isn’t just a frightening version of Iron Man – he might hold the key to understanding Doctor Doom’s motivations in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Although Iron Man and Doctor Doom have switched roles in Marvel comics before, Emperor Stark uniquely copies Doom’s look and, more importantly, his way of thinking. Like Doom, Emperor Stark genuinely believes his conquest of the world is for the greater good, and he’ll stop at nothing to achieve his goals. The storyline featuring Emperor Stark could be a perfect foundation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to explore an Iron Man who eventually transforms into Doctor Doom.
It’s not surprising to imagine Tony Stark becoming a world dictator in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His desire to protect the world, which led him to create Ultron and his initial idea of a global defense system, already hinted at a controlling nature. A version of Doctor Doom could easily be Tony Stark taking those impulses too far. Perhaps Tony even killed the original Victor Von Doom. The idea of Emperor Stark hiding facial injuries with a holographic projection is a clever way for Marvel Studios to maintain Doctor Doom’s recognizable look while also creating a dramatic reveal – Avengers could believe Tony Stark has returned, but as a powerful villain from another universe.
A key difference between this version of Doctor Doom (Emperor Stark) and the traditional heroic portrayal is that Stark is prejudiced and deliberately started a war against mutants with the goal of destroying them. With the X-Men confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, fans are wondering how they’ll be integrated into the story. Making Doctor Doom a version of Tony Stark who wants to eliminate mutants could be a clever way to connect the X-Men to the plot, positioning them as a group fighting for their lives against a former hero who has become a cruel ruler. This setup could also allow Doctor Doom to pit the X-Men and the Avengers against each other, eliminating both teams in the process.
Although it’s just a theory, the idea of Tony Stark becoming Doctor Doom – driven to impose his vision of safety and eliminate perceived dangers like the X-Men – could be a strong basis for a future Avengers film. If Marvel decides to explore a version of Doctor Doom who is connected to Tony Stark, the “With an Iron Fist” storyline offers excellent source material. A film depicting an Iron Man variant’s transformation into the all-powerful Doctor Doom could be a truly innovative and memorable chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
