The growing conflict in the Middle East is affecting two big theme park events planned in the United Arab Emirates, and is also causing problems for the global theme park industry as a whole.
The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) has canceled its SATE Europe, Middle East & Africa conference (SATE EME). The event was originally planned for March 25-28 at Dubai Parks & Resorts in the UAE.
The IAAPA Expo in Dubai has been cancelled. There are also unconfirmed reports that the IAAPA Expo Middle East, scheduled for March 30th to April 2nd in Abu Dhabi, might be cancelled as well. This potential cancellation follows security concerns and military activity involving Iran, leading companies to pull staff from the region. IAAPA has not yet officially confirmed the cancellation of the Abu Dhabi expo.
These two incidents mark the first major setbacks for the booming tourism industry in the Middle East since regional tensions began to rise.
TEA Confirms Cancellation Over Regional Security Concerns
When announcing the cancellation, the TEA explained it was due to growing safety concerns related to the changing global situation.
TEA CEO Melissa Oviedo explained that the decision wasn’t made easily. Considering the current tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States, and how those conflicts are affecting the wider region – including the United Arab Emirates – TEA felt it was important to proceed carefully and be clear about its actions.
Oviedo emphasized that protecting attendees remained the organization’s top priority.
Themed Entertainment Association cancels TEA SATE EME.

We prioritize the safety and well-being of everyone involved – our members, speakers, partners, and their families – above all else, and that will never change.
The CEO noted that a lot of people working in theme parks and entertainment have connections – both personal and professional – to this area.
We understand this is a difficult time, both at work and personally, and the entire TEA community around the world is here to support you.
The organization is now handling cancellations and will refund registration fees. They are also helping members cancel their hotel reservations.
IAAPA Monitoring Situation Before Event Cancellation
As of today, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) hasn’t officially canceled the IAAPA Expo Middle East, which was planned for March 30th to April 2nd in Abu Dhabi. They have said they are carefully watching how things develop.
Sources within the attractions industry indicate the event is likely canceled. The Stinger Report, an industry news source on X (formerly Twitter), stated that its sources have confirmed the expo will not happen.
I’m hearing through the industry that the IAAPA MENA expo has been cancelled. While we’re waiting for IAAPA to officially confirm, it seems like the recent security update from the US State Department has led to sponsors pulling their teams from the region, which ultimately caused the cancellation. It’s a bit disappointing, but safety comes first.

People working in the theme park industry have confirmed that the IAAPA MENA expo has been cancelled. While we’re waiting for an official announcement from IAAPA, sponsors have been forced to pull their staff from the region due to a recent security update from the U.S. State Department.
The post suggests that companies and sponsors are starting to withdraw staff from the area due to new security advice, which could lead to the event being canceled before any official statement is made.
IAAPA has not publicly confirmed the status of the event as of this writing.
Conflict Could Impact Middle Eastern Tourism Expansion
This news comes at a critical time for the Middle East, as its tourism industry and number of attractions are growing quickly.
In the last ten years, this region has heavily invested in entertainment venues and facilities as part of a plan to broaden its economy and lessen its dependence on oil money.
A standout development is Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, a popular destination for tourists with several well-known theme parks, such as:
- Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi
- SeaWorld Abu Dhabi
- Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
- Yas Waterworld
Yas Island is set to become an even bigger tourist destination. The Walt Disney Company and Abu Dhabi’s Miral have agreed to build a Disney theme park resort there, demonstrating strong international belief in the area’s growing tourism industry.
Saudi Arabia is experiencing a surge in tourism investment, with new destinations being developed as part of the Vision 2030 plan. This includes hosting large-scale events like WWE shows, culminating in WrestleMania 43 in 2027.
Increasing conflict in the region could create problems for tourism projects, potentially delaying travel, investments, and the ability to bring in workers – all of which are essential for these developments to succeed.
Trade shows like IAAPA and TEA usually reflect how optimistic businesses are about the future and how much they’re working with international partners. If these events are canceled, it likely means companies are being careful and waiting to see how things develop.
Disney and Warner Bros. Largely Shielded From Financial Risk
Even though tourism in the area is currently unpredictable, big entertainment companies like Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery aren’t likely to suffer significant financial losses because of it.
The reason lies in the business model used for attractions on Yas Island.

Instead of directly building and running the theme parks, Western film and entertainment companies allow Abu Dhabi-based Miral to handle construction and operation. Miral funds and builds the parks, and in return, pays licensing fees to the companies that own the characters and stories.
This setup generally means investors in the local community are responsible for the costs and risks of constructing and running these attractions.
Continued uncertainty could still cause problems, especially for projects that haven’t finished yet.
Planned Disney Park in Abu Dhabi Could Face Delays
I’m really excited about the potential new Disney theme park that’s being planned for Abu Dhabi! It’s still in the very early stages, but it’s definitely something a lot of people are keeping an eye on.
This project is being developed like other attractions on Yas Island: Miral is funding the building, and Disney is providing its characters and stories under license.

Even with everything planned out, I worry that global events could really throw a wrench in things. Things like political issues could slow down building, make it harder to get the necessary permissions, and even affect our ability to bring in the international team we need to create this amazing theme park.
If the conflict in the region remains limited, the impact may ultimately prove temporary.
If the current conflict escalates into a wider regional war, the cancellation of events like IAAPA Expo and TEA SATE EME could be an early indicator of significant problems for the rapidly expanding tourism industry in the Middle East.
