The Mummy 4 directors reveals why The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is no longer canon in the franchise

I was really interested to hear what the directors of the new Mummy movie, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, had to say about the previous films. Apparently, they’ve decided that ‘The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor‘ won’t be considered part of the official storyline moving forward. It’s a bold choice, but I’m curious to see where they take the franchise now!

The next installment in the series will bring back Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as their iconic characters, Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. The pair previously starred together in The Mummy (1999) and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns. This new film will be directed by Radio Silence, with a screenplay by David Coggeshal.

However, when a third film, The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, was approved in 2008, Rachel Weisz didn’t reprise her role as Evelyn; Maria Bello took over the part instead.

When asked about whether their new movie considers ‘The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’ part of the established storyline, director Olpin told Entertainment Weekly, “Rachel is in this one,” implying that it is.

Gillett added: “That should answer the question for you.”

The filmmakers haven’t revealed much about what the new movie is about, but they promise it will be full of heartwarming moments and well-developed characters.

Fraser previously said of the franchise: “The one I wanted to make was never made.”

After that, we teamed up and went to China. Working in Shanghai was an amazing experience. I’m especially proud of the third film because it works well as its own story. We assembled a new team and did everything we could to make it great.

The project I’ve been dreaming of is finally happening. I’ve waited two decades for this opportunity – sometimes it felt clear, other times it was just a subtle sign. But now, the moment has come to deliver what the fans have been asking for.

The Mummy 4 is set to be released in cinemas on 19 May 2028.
