The 1990s built on the success of big-budget sci-fi films from the 1980s, becoming a groundbreaking decade for the genre. It fully embraced new digital technology, creating visually stunning movies with computer-generated effects – like those seen in Jurassic Park and The Matrix – that continue to shape filmmaking today. A classic sci-fi film from this era is now streaming on Prime Video, and after watching it, viewers can enjoy the contemporary TV series it inspired.
The classic 1995 sci-fi thriller 12 Monkeys, starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, became available on Prime Video on March 1st. Directed by Terry Gilliam, the film—which was inspired by the 1962 short film La Jetée—takes place in a future world ravaged by a deadly plague. It follows James Cole, a prisoner sent back in time to investigate the virus’s beginnings, but he quickly finds himself caught in a mind-bending paradox that questions his reality. Widely considered one of the best sci-fi movies of the 1990s, 12 Monkeys was so influential that it led to the creation of the 12 Monkeys TV series on Syfy—all four seasons of which are also now streaming on Prime Video.
12 Monkeys Remains One of the Best ‘90s Sci-Fi Movies
As a huge movie fan, I still think 12 Monkeys is one of the best sci-fi films of the ’90s, and it totally holds up. It’s not just Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt – though Pitt was amazing and even got an Oscar nod! – it’s the story itself. What really sets it apart is how carefully the time travel is handled. Unlike some movies where anything goes, 12 Monkeys sticks to a really solid, closed-loop timeline. Everything James Cole does in the past already happened – it’s all part of a fixed history that can’t be changed. The film never cheats with its own rules, which makes it such a powerfully tragic story. It’s heartbreaking to watch Cole struggle, knowing he’s ultimately trapped by fate and destined to fail in preventing the pandemic.
This movie is a deeply moving look at how delicate the human mind can be. Everything about it – Bruce Willis’s powerful performance as a man trying to alter fate, and the dark, confined setting – supports its complex, time-bending story. The ending is particularly strong, delivering a satisfying and emotionally impactful conclusion. Both the original film and its TV series have been critically acclaimed: the movie boasts an 88% rating from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, while the series maintained an 88% critic score and a 78% audience rating over its four seasons.
