Romantic fantasy, or ‘Romantasy,’ is incredibly popular, but movies and TV shows haven’t quite caught up. Many of the best books haven’t been adapted for the screen yet. Fans of Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses were upset when a TV series based on the books was canceled, and Maas hadn’t publicly addressed it – until recently.
In a recent episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, author Sarah J. Maas revealed she now owns the rights to adapt her books herself. She shared her excitement about being fully involved in any future TV or movie adaptations, explaining she wants to oversee the creative process from start to finish. While admitting she’s a bit of a perfectionist, Maas emphasized her passion for film and television and her desire to ensure any adaptations stay true to her vision and what fans expect.
Rumors suggested that creative disagreements were slowing down the TV series adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Sarah J. Maas seems to be confirming those reports. She emphasizes that she has no intention of changing her stories to attract a wider audience, as she believes in artistic integrity and wants to be proud of her work. She states, “If I do it, it will be my vision, and I’ll put my full effort into getting it right.”
Sarah J. Maas’ Priority Is On New Novels, Not TV Shows or Movies
Although Hulu’s planned series based on A Court of Thorns and Roses seems to have fallen through – and the rights may have reverted – Sarah J. Maas is currently focused on her books. She recently revealed that the next major story arc will be told across three novels. The first book is scheduled for release in October 2026, followed by the second in January 2027. Maas hasn’t shared the titles of these new books yet, which has sparked a lot of excitement and speculation among her fans.
S.A. Maas isn’t alone in wanting to be involved in adaptations of her work. Brandon Sanderson’s The Stormlight Archive is being developed by Apple TV, and he’ll have a significant role, acting as a writer, producer, and consultant with creative control. This is a shift from situations like Andrzej Sapkowski’s experience with The Witcher, where authors have limited influence. It seems we’re seeing a trend of fantasy authors wanting more control over how their stories are brought to the screen.
As a huge fan, I’m realizing an A Court of Thorns and Roses adaptation – whether it’s a movie or a TV series – is going to be a while off, and that’s okay! Sarah J. Maas has such a massive story planned, covering at least four books, and she’s also busy writing the Crescent City series. Honestly, that’s good news – it means she’s taking her time and ensuring a quality adaptation, which is way better than rushing things!
