You might be asking yourself if the Joker knows Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, and the answer is yes, he does. Surprisingly, though, it doesn’t seem to bother him much. Bruce Wayne goes to great lengths to keep his identity secret, and when that secret has been exposed or threatened, it’s always been a big problem. However, recent stories have shown that the Joker, Batman’s most dangerous and unpredictable enemy, has long understood that Bruce Wayne and Batman are the same person.
As a longtime Batman fan, it’s been established for ages – way back in the New 52 with the “Death of the Family” storyline – that the Joker knows Bruce Wayne is Batman. It wasn’t just a one-time thing either! “Endgame” doubled down on it, and even more recently, during James Tynion IV’s run, the Joker actually used that knowledge to rob Bruce’s fortune. DC seems pretty set on this being a permanent part of their history. But honestly, after their latest encounter, it feels like the Joker knowing Bruce’s secret isn’t the big deal everyone thought it would be. It’s like, yeah he knows, but it doesn’t really change anything.
Joker Won’t Reveal Batman’s Identity Because He’s Bruce’s Friend

The latest issue of Batman, #7, from creators Matt Fraction, Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles, opens with Batman receiving a surprising invitation: a visit with the Joker at Arkham Towers. The Joker cleverly used an inside contact to request the meeting, piquing Batman’s curiosity. Despite Dr. Annika Zeller’s concerns about the encounter, Batman agrees to speak with his nemesis in Arkham’s most secure area. Though skeptical, Batman is surprised by the Joker’s willingness to openly share information.
Under Dr. Zeller’s treatment, Joker appears to be genuinely improving. Her unique “Crown of Storms” technology has helped him think rationally and communicate effectively with Batman. Surprisingly, Joker now recognizes his own need for confinement, telling Batman he should be isolated to keep others safe. While Batman suspects a trick, Joker insists he doesn’t want to escape and only requested this meeting for two specific reasons.
Joker genuinely thinks Batman is isolated and needs a friend who truly gets him. With a clearer mind, Joker now recognizes similarities between himself and Batman, believing they have more in common than they admit. Their therapy session ends, but Joker asks for a private moment with Batman. During this time, Joker reveals the real reason for his request: to warn Bruce Wayne that someone is coming to kill him – not Batman, but Bruce himself.
Deep Down, the Joker Actually Cares About Batman

It’s no secret that the Joker has a strange and complex relationship with Batman. For years, writers have suggested the Joker feels a warped kind of love for his enemy. However, this recent story makes it clear that the Joker’s connection to Batman isn’t just a symptom of his madness. Instead, it shows they genuinely recognize a shared loneliness and see each other as kindred spirits, both fighting a long-standing battle with isolation.
It’s not great that the Joker knows Batman is actually Bruce Wayne. He might cause trouble, like stealing Batman’s money to disrupt his work, but revealing Batman’s secret identity goes too far. The Joker likes to shake things up, but he avoids actions with irreversible consequences. From his perspective, there’s no benefit in exposing a secret his ‘friend’ works so hard to protect.
The Joker’s reasons for doing things change depending on who’s writing the story, but most people agree he doesn’t truly want to harm Batman. What the Joker really wants is to have fun and connect with the man he sees as a friend. He’s repeatedly had the opportunity to reveal Batman’s identity, but instead, he’s often warned Bruce Wayne when someone is targeting him. The Joker considers Batman a friend, and as long as he feels that way, Batman’s secret is safe with him.
