The announcement of LEGO Horizon Adventures was surprising, but not because of the game itself. What caught people off guard was which gaming systems it was being released on.
Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo teamed up to create this action platformer, which launched at the same time on PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
Releasing the game on Switch is a logical move considering its popularity with younger players. However, Sony rarely develops exclusive games for platforms other than their own, with a few exceptions.
According to Reece Reilly, known online as “Kiwi Talkz” and famous for his many interviews with game developers, Sony didn’t decide to release the game on Nintendo Switch.
“Lego Horizon only released on Switch because it was mandated by the Lego Group,” he says on X.
He clarifies that his statement isn’t a guess, but based on confirmed knowledge. He states that Sony considers Nintendo a direct competitor.
It appears Sony only released LEGO Horizon Adventures on Switch due to a requirement from LEGO itself.
If Sony hadn’t been involved in the game’s development, they likely would have released it on PlayStation 5 before bringing it to PC, and that would have been the end of it.
In hindsight it’s a fairly obvious detail, but an interesting one all the same.
Sony will likely be more cautious in the future, especially since they seem to be reconsidering releasing their exclusive games on platforms other than PlayStation.
Okay, so the LEGO Horizon set was a bit different – LEGO actually requested that one. But as for MLB The Show, it seems like it’ll keep coming out on everything, which makes sense because the people who own the rights basically require it!
Honestly, it’s looking more and more like Sony’s planning to keep all their PlayStation Studios games exclusive to PlayStation. They seem pretty set on that strategy, and aren’t showing any signs of changing it.
