It’s been almost a year since the Nintendo Switch 2 launched, and fans are still waiting for a new 3D Super Mario game. Unlike the original Switch, which quickly received Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo has focused on titles like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond for the new console. However, there’s growing optimism that a new Mario adventure could be revealed within the next week.
Nintendo will celebrate “Mario Day” on March 10th, a tradition they’ve kept up for nearly ten years. The holiday, dedicated to everything Mario, has looked different each year, with things like game sales, hints about upcoming titles, and even special presentations. While we don’t know what Nintendo has planned for 2024, if they’re holding back a new 3D Mario game, Mario Day would be a perfect time to reveal it.
The Timing of This Reveal Makes Sense

Nintendo already has a solid list of exclusive games planned for 2026, including the recently launched Pokemon Pokopia, as well as titles like Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, and Rhythm Heaven Groove. However, they currently don’t have a new game from one of their most popular franchises, and a new Mario game could fill that gap.
Releasing a new 3D Mario game would instantly create huge excitement for the Switch 2. The timing would be ideal too, as The Super Mario Bros. Movie comes out next month and is expected to be very popular. With Mario fever already building, announcing a new Mario game on March 10th would be a smart move for Nintendo. However, it’s important to remember that we don’t know if Nintendo is even working on a new Mario game, or if it would be ready for the Switch 2.
A New 3D Mario Game Is Inevitable

While we might not see a brand new 3D Mario game announced for the Switch 2 on Mario Day, one is almost guaranteed to come eventually. Nintendo consistently releases a major Mario game with each new console. The Wii U was the only exception, and even then it received Super Mario 3D World, which was a 3D Mario platformer, though different in style from classics like Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy.
Even though Mario Day has passed without a big announcement, I’m still hopeful we’ll hear something soon. The Switch 2 has had a great first year, but it won’t truly feel like a Nintendo console until a new Mario game is released. So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll get our first look at the next Mario adventure on Switch 2 this week.
