Heated Rivalry showrunner confirmed for “insanely compelling” historical drama from Netflix based on legendary historical figures

Jacob Tierney, the creator of the popular HBO series Heated Rivalry, is now developing a new show – a captivating story about a strong friendship in ancient times.

Netflix has ordered a new series called Alexander, according to Deadline. The show will depict the formative teenage years of Alexander the Great and his connection with the philosopher Aristotle.

Tierney will both write and direct the project, with Brendan Brady producing (known for ‘Heated Rivalry’). Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan will serve as executive producers.

This new series is based on Annabel Lyon’s 2009 novel, The Golden Mean. The story centers on a young and headstrong Alexander as he’s tutored by the brilliant philosopher Aristotle, all while the Athenian empire begins to fall apart.

Against a backdrop of palace secrets, passionate but forbidden romance, violent conflict, and relentless power grabs, an unexpected friendship blossoms and ultimately reshapes an entire empire, changing history forever.

Tierney shared that he’s been captivated by Annabel Lyon’s novel, The Golden Mean, for years and has long wanted to adapt it. He expressed his excitement about bringing the book’s fascinating world to the screen.

As a huge fan of well-adapted stories, I was really interested to hear that Netflix was excited about Tierney’s take on Annabel Lyon’s novel. Apparently, the team, led by Jinny Howe, were completely hooked by his vision for bringing the book to life. It sounds like they saw something special in his approach right away.

This series offers a fresh take on the classic mentor-protégé dynamic, delivering a story that feels both grand in scope and deeply personal.

We believe this exciting and intense story will connect with viewers around the world, and we’re thrilled to be working with Jason Bateman and Aggregate Films to make it happen.

Tierney was the writer and director of all six episodes of the recent HBO drama, Heated Rivalry. The show proved popular after launching on Crave in Canada and HBO Max in the US last November, and on Sky and NOW in the UK in January.

The series centers on a secret romance between two opposing stars in the National Hockey League. It’s been praised for its realistic and positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ athletes and its open-minded approach to sexuality.

A release date for Alexander is yet to be announced.
