Narciso Rodriguez is fascinated with the myth behind one of his most stunning creations.
The designer who created Carolyn Bessette’s famous silk wedding dress – the one she wore when she married John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1996 – said the stressful wedding dress shopping scene in the movie Love Story wasn’t accurate. It didn’t happen that way in real life.
In a recent interview with The Cut, Narciso explained the story behind a memorable dress fitting. He shared that he’d heard many accounts of mishaps – the dress not fitting, people misremembering who was there – but the actual fitting was simple: it was just him and the actress in the bathroom, carefully putting the dress over her head. He acknowledged that these kinds of stories become part of the show’s legend.
This moment played out on screen in a recent episode. The character Carolyn, played by Sarah Pidgeon, was figuring out how to get into the dress after applying makeup. When she offered to step into it, Narciso (Tonatiuh) pointed out there wasn’t a zipper, so she’d have to pull it over her head. He quickly made a small alteration to help her get it on.
Even after almost thirty years, Narisco vividly remembers designing Carolyn’s wedding dress. They first met while working at Calvin Klein in the 1990s, and he poured his heart into every detail – from the way the gown was cut to the delicate matching gloves and veil. He describes it as a true passion project.
The fashion designer also revealed that Carolyn—who tragically died in a 1999 plane crash with JFK Jr. and her sister Lauren Bessette—contributed a small but memorable detail to the final design.
He remembered the moment clearly, saying, “She lowered her neckline, and that was all it took.” He described it as a natural connection, explaining they understood each other well and, because she was beautiful, he instinctively knew how to make her look her best.
Although Love Story offered a unique perspective on Carolyn’s wedding planning, the FX show also included some realistic details. Lisa DePaulo, who used to work with JFK Jr. at George magazine, specifically complimented Sarah’s portrayal of the publicist.

According to a February column in The Hollywood Reporter, she was incredibly intelligent and had a great sense of humor. The author also felt that Pidgeon perfectly captured the unique, captivating quality Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy possessed – the undeniable charm that made it clear why John Kennedy was so deeply in love with her.
Lisa agreed, pointing out that Paul Anthony Kelly’s portrayal of JFK Jr. felt authentic because of small details – specifically, the way he walked and how he secured his bicycle in certain moments, which closely resembled the attorney’s actual behavior.
She explained that the actor often successfully imitated John’s voice throughout the film, though not in every scene. John had a very unique speaking style – a particular rhythm and tone – and when the actor nailed it, it was incredibly moving. She also acknowledged the screenwriters’ contribution to capturing the natural back-and-forth dialogue and pacing of the conversations.

In the movie Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, Carolyn (played by Sarah Pidgeon) advises Annette Bening (played by Megan Channell) to wear a Calvin Klein suit to the Bugsy premiere instead of the dress the designer chose for her.
It’s unknown if she created that outfit for Annette Bening, who later married Warren Beatty, but a 1996 New York Times article revealed Carolyn was Calvin Klein’s main salesperson for famous clients, including Annette, Diane Sawyer, and Blaire Trump.
According to Paul Wilmott, who was Calvin Klein’s VP of public relations at the time, she would help customers find clothes that suited them, offer styling advice, and ultimately, sell a significant amount of merchandise – reportedly millions of dollars worth over time. He described it as a truly positive experience.
In a memorable scene from Love Story, Carolyn demonstrates her marketing expertise by advising Calvin (played by Alessandro Nivola) to feature Kate Moss in an advertising campaign.
Carolyn was one of the first people to recognize Kate Moss’s potential, and she played a key role in shaping the Calvin Klein image of the 1990s.

In the movie Love Story, Calvin brings Carolyn and John together at a charity event in 1992, and they immediately feel a connection. However, Carolyn playfully declines to give Calvin her phone number, reminding him that he can easily reach her at work.
“He was just bored,” Carolyn explained to her friends at the nightclub as Michael Bergin, who they playfully called the “sexy doorman” (and was played by Noah Fearnley), arrived.
John unexpectedly appeared at Calvin Klein and requested a private fitting with Carolyn. He then invited her to dinner, and when he left, her coworkers were completely shocked and excited.
According to Elizabeth Beller’s 2024 biography, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy first met in the spring of 1992. John was at Calvin Klein for a private fitting, and her coworkers were reportedly very excited. He then asked Carolyn to join him at a gala, but she initially declined an invitation to an after-party because she mistakenly believed he was with another woman, as told to Beller by Carolyn’s friend, MJ Bettenhausen.

Carolyn and Michael, a former hotel doorman and model, briefly dated starting in the fall of 1992, but their relationship was mostly on-and-off, according to Beller’s book.
According to Beller, many of Carolyn’s friends doubted Bergin’s claim – made in his 2004 book, The Other Man – that he continued a sexual relationship with her, not only after she met John, but until her death.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn is waiting at an Indian restaurant for John. After about 20 minutes, just as she’s about to leave, he arrives riding his bicycle.
He accidentally left the car unlocked, and when they returned from their long date, it was gone. This meant he ended up walking Carolyn home instead.
He said he wished he hadn’t rushed, as they reached her door. She asked what he meant, and he kissed her. He then asked if he’d see her again, and she replied that she’d enjoyed their evening together before ending the date.
In real life, John and this person likely had a first date, and it’s possible he biked there and was a little late. However, the charming scene of them connecting over drinks was probably staged for the show.

Daryl Hannah, John’s sometimes girlfriend, is visiting his apartment when he returns home. He’s just been telling his cousin and best friend, Anthony Radziwill, that all he wants to do is call Carolyn.
He’s planning to bring Daryl to a wedding in October 1993 – his cousin Edward Kennedy Jr.’s – even though his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy, doesn’t approve. Meanwhile, Carolyn discovers from a tabloid magazine that the man who seemed so interested in her is actually getting back together with his famous ex-girlfriend.
John continued to send Carolyn flowers, and when they ran into each other at an event, he confessed he was struggling because he thought she disliked him. Carolyn responded that she didn’t know him well enough to feel that way.
The unexpected meeting was a memorable way to introduce the star of Splash in Love Story, but producers didn’t consult with Daryl, who has been married to Neil Young since 2018.
Producer Nina Jacobson explained to Gold Derby that they focus on understanding characters deeply. She said it’s difficult to push specific storylines when interviewing the people those characters are based on, so they generally avoid doing that unless absolutely necessary.
Okay, so about Daryl… she’s totally the one throwing wrenches into everything I want to happen, according to the creator. But they still get that Daryl gets this whole celebrity scene in a way Carolyn just doesn’t. They really try to show that, like, she’s not just a villain, she actually understands how things work in that world, which is fascinating to me!

When John walks in and sees Daryl hanging out with her eccentric friends, it’s a clear signal that big changes are coming. She ultimately decides to leave him, pushing him to think about what he truly desires.
Daryl promised to return for her dog, Hank. However, while John was walking Hank, he was distracted by an autograph request, accidentally dropped the leash, and Hank was tragically struck by a taxi and killed. John then traveled to Los Angeles to deliver Hank’s ashes to Daryl.
According to the 2024 book JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, John F. Kennedy Jr.’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recounted that John’s dog, Hank, ran into traffic in Central Park and was hit by a car in May 1994.
According to his friend Steven Gillon, he traveled to Los Angeles to bury a dog. While he was there, his mother’s health suddenly worsened. He felt angry that Daryl had insisted he attend the dog’s funeral when his mother was seriously ill with cancer.
As a big fan of Love Story, I always found that scene with Jackie – Naomi Watts plays her so well – incredibly moving. It’s when she leaves a message for John right before collapsing, and it was designed to be a powerful moment. Knowing she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 1993, and tragically passed away on May 19, 1994, really hits home just how sick she was, and how much that message meant. It’s a heartbreaking detail that adds so much to the story.

Okay, so after that gala – ugh, don’t even get me started – John and Carolyn didn’t lay eyes on each other for ages! It was awful. Finally, finally, on May 18th, 1992, they were at another event, a fundraiser, and I nearly died when I saw them in the same room again. It felt like forever!
They connected quickly and dated throughout the summer, but eventually drifted apart for nearly two years, as described in Beller’s book. It wasn’t until after Jackie passed away that they finally became a lasting couple.
According to executive producer Brad Simpson, the couple’s relationship was actually quite turbulent, with more ups and downs than the show could realistically portray. However, the producers decided to move the story forward, believing viewers wouldn’t want to watch a drawn-out, inconsistent romance, he told USA Today.

When he brings Carolyn home to his loft for the first time, John realizes he forgot his keys.
Although it looked dramatic on television, the real John was often forgetful and frequently lost his keys and wallet. This habit eventually made Carolyn hesitant to fly with him by himself after he earned his pilot’s license.
Beyond that hint of what’s to come, John doesn’t mention the true nature of the party when he invites Carolyn. He tells her it’s a casual get-together, but it’s actually a formal dinner celebrating his sister, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg’s, birthday.
When Carolyn expresses worry, Caroline (Grace Gummer) quickly explains that John often forgets things, but he would never bring women home without letting them know beforehand.

John introduced Carolyn to his sister on her 37th birthday, November 27, 1994. According to Carole Radziwill’s memoir, What Remains, the get-together at Carolyn’s Park Avenue apartment was more of a party than a formal dinner.
The former Real Housewives star, who attended with Anthony and was excited to see Carolyn, described her friend entering the private room looking stunning and unapologetically herself, and acting very warmly and spontaneously.
Caroline hugged John and told Carolyn, “So nice to meet you,” Carole recalled. “Her friends smile politely and then shift their focus to John.”
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always been fascinated by the Kennedys, and there’s a common misconception about Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy. Contrary to what many believed, they actually hit it off right away! I recently read in Beller’s Once Upon a Time about an observation from someone who saw them having lunch together. They said the two women genuinely seemed to enjoy each other’s company, and the conversation was easy and filled with laughter. It was lovely to hear they connected so well!

After playing touch football with friends, John discovered a letter in his gym bag suggesting Carolyn had used her boss, Calvin Klein, to arrange a meeting with him because she was interested in a relationship. When Carolyn visited later, John confronted her about the letter, and she was upset he’d even consider it could be true, so she left.
After what felt like ages, he finally came to her apartment and admitted he’d made a mistake. This honest conversation led to him telling her he loved her for the very first time.
According to Beller, John did receive a letter outlining rumors about Carolyn’s active social life and relationships, but it happened early in their dating history. Following a summer romance in 1992, John abruptly ended things after reading the letter, and Carolyn didn’t accept his apologies for over a year.

Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! John finally proposed to Carolyn! It happened after they went to Hyannis Port – she just met his whole family, and it was intense, especially meeting his aunt, Ethel Kennedy (played by Jessica Harper, who was AMAZING, by the way!). She’s basically the queen of the family, the undisputed matriarch, and it all happened while they were out on a row boat! I’m seriously losing it right now!
Carolyn said she needs some time to consider it, explaining they have several important things to talk over first.
In 1994, Per Beller recalls John bringing Carolyn to his family’s vacation home for Labor Day weekend. John did volunteer for a breakfast duty while they were there, but didn’t ask Carolyn to join him.
Terenzio says John proposed to Carolyn while they were on a trip to Martha’s Vineyard over the Fourth of July weekend in 1995. He cleverly proposed by saying, “Fishing is so much better with a partner.”
Okay, so the story behind the ring is fascinating! He actually proposed with a beautiful diamond and sapphire eternity band. Now, on the show, JFK Jr. says it was his mother’s, but the real story is even sweeter. John actually had Jackie’s close friend, Maurice Tempelsman, design a ring inspired by her famous emerald and sapphire ring – you know, the one she called her ‘swimming ring.’ He wanted to capture that same feeling. And here’s a little secret – he gave Carolyn both rings! It was such a romantic gesture, according to sources.
According to a friend of John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy made him wait around three weeks before she responded to a proposal. While biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli wrote that she didn’t explicitly say yes, she did start wearing an engagement ring and told friends they were planning a wedding. However, in an oral history, RoseMarie Terenzio recalls Carolyn telling her that they became engaged over the holiday weekend.
Oh my gosh, even before everything blew up, they were engaged for months! Months, can you believe it? It wasn’t some whirlwind romance; they were seriously planning a life together before that awful fight in Washington Square Park. It just breaks my heart thinking about it.

Carolyn was a trusted confidante of her boss, Calvin Klein, and also enjoyed a close friendship with his wife, photographer Kelly Klein.
In the movie Love Story, Kelly (played by Leila George) challenges Calvin when he tells her she can’t continue working for him because their engagement—publicized by a New York Post cover announcing JFK Jr.’s proposal—will be a distraction.
Kelly retorted, “Honestly, you’re hardly one to talk about keeping secrets,” and Calvin replied, “You knew what you were getting into from the start.”
It was heartbreaking, honestly. The designer suddenly asked me to be her plus-one to a gala that evening, but the way she said it – ‘one last time’ – made it crystal clear she was ending our relationship. It was a really painful way to find out.
Calvin and Kelly announced they were separating in August 1996. According to columnist Liz Smith, they released a statement saying they remained good friends and made a mutual decision to live separately, with respect for each other, and hoped to resolve any differences. Their divorce was finalized in 2006.
At 83 years old, Calvin has been with his partner, model Kevin Baker, for a decade. Baker is 46 years younger than Calvin.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn skips John’s press conference where he introduces George magazine. At the event, he reveals the first cover, which features Cindy Crawford playfully dressed as George Washington.
She watched the news from home, understanding John had to deny proposing to her. She didn’t want rumors about her rejecting him to distract from the important news about George.
Carolyn intentionally avoided the launch event on September 7, 1995. Terenzio, responsible for downplaying rumors about John’s engagement—which had started after people noticed Carolyn’s ring—explained that John and his partner, Michael Berman, believed her attendance would be a distraction, and that she didn’t mind not being there.
John’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recalled in an interview that Carolyn was deeply upset by John’s public refusal to confirm their engagement. Chermayeff felt this was an early indication of what their relationship would be like – a pattern of John controlling the narrative and Carolyn accepting it.

In the fifth episode, Carolyn and John have a heated argument while walking their dog, which ultimately leads to a tearful acceptance of John’s marriage proposal.
Oh my god, I remember it so vividly! The media just wouldn’t let it go, every detail of that fight between John and Carolyn on February 25th, 1996, was everywhere! It was like watching it happen all over again – John practically ripping her engagement ring off, him sobbing on the curb, screaming at her while she desperately held onto the dog… and that line! “You’ve got my ring, you’re not getting my dog!” It was all over the news, just exactly as it happened. I’ve re-read the reports a million times, it’s burned into my memory!
The show focuses on a fight stemming from John’s rejected proposal, where he angrily claims everything would be fine if she’d just said yes. However, the audience learns they’d actually been engaged privately for around five months. Earlier in the episode, Carolyn secretly tries on the ring and seems happy with it, but hasn’t formally accepted his proposal before the argument begins.
In her interview, Terenzio remembered that she and her husband often argued because he was being used by his friends.
At a wedding, they found themselves seated beside a reporter from the New York Times who was covering the event for the “Vows” column. According to Terenzio, Carolyn believed it was wrong to put a friend in that position. While she regretted the argument, she was also upset with John, feeling she had been trying to shield him from being exploited.

Following a public argument between Carolyn and John, Ethel extends an invitation to her future niece-in-law, asking her to visit her estate in Virginia, Hickory Hill.
Robert F. Kennedy’s widow offered Carolyn a stark but compassionate warning: once trust is broken, it’s incredibly difficult to regain. She explained that men can be deeply hurtful, pushing you to your limits, and urged Carolyn not to allow herself to be driven to despair.
Ethel actually had Carolyn brought to her home, where, according to J. Randy Taraborelli’s 2019 book, The Kennedy Heirs, she told Carolyn to ignore the negativity and persevere.
According to a friend who was with Carolyn, Ethel Kennedy admitted that life as a Kennedy was challenging. However, the mother of eleven explained that she learned a crucial lesson: the key to coping was to affirm her own self-worth daily. She would look in the mirror each morning and tell herself, simply, ‘I am enough.’ She realized that believing this – truly believing it – meant no one, not even the Kennedys themselves, could diminish her value.
Ethel cautioned Carolyn against losing her temper publicly again, as described in the book. She warned that these men were quick to anger and advised Carolyn not to let them provoke her into behaving badly in front of everyone.

Carolyn shares with her sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette (played by Sydney Lemmon), that she’s considering asking her to be her maid of honor. She explains that Lauren seemed upset about being left out of the wedding planning process.
Carolyn worries that her sister feels left out. She believes resolving this is important because she doesn’t want to start her marriage with any lingering resentment.
Lauren says, “This will mean nothing to her. And it would have meant everything to me.”
John asked Carolyn to invite Caroline to be the maid of honor. He hoped this would mend things after his sister blamed Carolyn for a public scene and used it as a reason to call off the wedding. John believed it was the best way to resolve the conflict.

Two weeks after their argument at the park, Carolyn went to Calvin to quit, explaining she was worried her personal issues were becoming a problem. He confessed he was surprised and a little hurt by her decision.
He described her as “a bright light” and assured her she would be well taken care of with Narciso Rodriguez—a former colleague—designing her wedding gown. Once she’s gone, he tidies up his design portfolio, and we briefly see a dress sketch tucked away in a drawer.
“Calvin was very upset” when Carolyn quit, a colleague told Beller. “He felt left behind.”
In the show Love Story, Calvin learns about the dress because Carolyn was previously pictured with the designer Narciso (Tonatiuh). However, in real life, Carolyn quit her job before she started seriously planning a wedding.

Ann Freeman, played by Constance Zimmer, fears Carolyn is losing her identity in her marriage. She expresses this worry privately to her daughter, but surprisingly reveals the same concerns to everyone during a speech at the rehearsal dinner.
Ann described John as overwhelmingly affectionate, and she was concerned about how Carolyn could handle such a strong personality. She hoped Carolyn would be able to rely on John’s support when she needed it.
John privately told his future mother-in-law that her daughter means everything to him.
You know, there’s always been a bit of mystery around that conversation. While we don’t have a direct quote, a close friend of John’s, Robert Littell, shared in his memoir, The Men We Became, that Ann actually voiced some concerns about the relationship. She hinted that she wasn’t entirely sure it was the right thing for her daughter, and she wasn’t shy about expressing that.
And John, he wrote, was “visibly stung by his mother-in-law’s remarks.”
Littell mentioned that while he and a few other guests continued the party on the beach, Carolyn had already gone to bed hours earlier. This meant the scene in the movie Love Story – where John and Carolyn fall asleep together on the beach and go swimming naked the morning of their wedding – was actually a fictional addition created to make the story more romantic.

Carolyn had a real panic when she discovered she’d have to pull Narciso’s dress – which didn’t have a zipper – over her head after her makeup was already finished.
Gogo Ferguson, the designer of the couple’s unique rattlesnake-rib wedding bands, remembered in an interview that dressing Carolyn was a struggle. She described it as if the dress was incredibly smooth and flowing over Carolyn’s skin, while Narciso seemed determined to tightly secure her in it. Terenzio noted that Narciso had to repeatedly adjust the dress’s neckline, and they eventually covered Carolyn’s head with a scarf to protect her hair and makeup.
Gordon Henderson, a friend of the bride and the designer of the groom’s tuxedo and the groomsmen’s suits, shared with Town & Country that he also offered a handkerchief to help the groom feel his best. He explained that when a friend is getting married, you want to do everything you can to ensure they’re happy and the day goes smoothly.
In Beller’s Once Upon a Time, Carolyn needs to redo her hair and makeup after she gets dressed.
The ceremony didn’t begin until 7 p.m., later than the originally planned 5 p.m. John was delayed because he couldn’t find his shirt, and since the historic First African Baptist Church, built in the 1800s, didn’t have electricity, they had to use candles.
