One of the Decade’s Best Action Movies Climbs Netflix Charts After $174M Box Office Disappointment

Released in 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road was a huge hit with both critics and audiences. Praised for its incredible action and thought-provoking story, the film earned over $380 million worldwide and even received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Director, winning six awards for its technical achievements. The film’s surprising success allowed director George Miller to expand the world he created with the prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. While Furiosa didn’t perform as well in cinemas, it’s now gaining popularity with viewers on streaming services.

According to streaming data from FlixPatrol, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is now the ninth most popular movie on Netflix worldwide, just ahead of The Angry Birds Movie. Currently, Furiosa is available on Netflix in certain countries, but viewers in the United States can stream it on HBO Max.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Is One of the Decade’s Best Action Films

Despite a disappointing box office run of $174.3 million and no Oscar nominations, Furiosa is still well worth watching. The film has earned a strong 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and stands as a fantastic entry in the Mad Max series, perfectly complementing Fury Road. Director George Miller once again proves his skill, delivering incredible action sequences that blend practical effects with digital technology. Each scene is visually stunning and creates a truly immersive, large-scale experience – a hallmark of Miller’s work, and something he delivers beautifully in Furiosa.

While Furiosa delivers plenty of exciting action, the film truly works because of the strong performances, especially from Anya Taylor-Joy. Taking on the role previously played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road – arguably her best film – was a tough assignment, but Taylor-Joy handled it beautifully. She captures the essence of Furiosa, convincingly portraying the character’s determination and desperation. Importantly, Taylor-Joy doesn’t simply imitate Theron; she makes the role her own while still respecting the original portrayal. It’s a delicate balance, but she makes it completely believable that this younger version of Furiosa would eventually become the battle-hardened warrior we see in Fury Road.

Chris Hemsworth delivers what many are calling the best performance of his career in Furiosa, playing the villain Dementus. It’s a significant change from his usual heroic roles, and he portrays a truly disturbing character by twisting his natural charm into something unsettling. Dementus isn’t simply a typical villain; the film explores the tragic events that shaped him, making him a complex and compelling character. While he’s undeniably a villain, audiences will likely find themselves both captivated by and wanting to see him get his due.

George Miller has ideas for future Mad Max films, but it’s uncertain if he’ll get to make them. If Furiosa had been as successful as Fury Road, Warner Bros. would likely have approved another movie. Unfortunately, Furiosa didn’t do well in theaters – it cost $168 million to make – and despite good reviews, that means the franchise is unlikely to continue. Studios need to make money, and Furiosa‘s box office performance wasn’t strong enough. It’s disappointing, as the Mad Max world is full of potential, and it would have been great to see Miller’s other ideas come to life. However, considering how difficult it was to even finish Fury Road, fans can at least be glad those two films exist for them to enjoy.
