5 DC Characters Who Deserve Absolute Versions (But Probably Won’t Get Them)

DC’s Absolute Universe is a standout series in comics today. This alternate world is shaped by the dark energy of Darkseid, a contrast to the hopeful energy of the main DC universe. It’s a place of constant conflict where heroes struggle against the odds. The familiar characters we know have been fundamentally changed, losing some of their usual strengths, but still retaining their essential personalities. The series cleverly explores what truly defines these heroes – and other characters as well. It’s been a really enjoyable read so far, and the world is constantly expanding with new characters and storylines being added.

As the DC Absolute Universe expands, fans have expressed interest in seeing Absolute versions of certain characters, but it’s unlikely to happen in the near future. These characters either don’t quite fit the established world or have already died within the DC storyline. Here are five characters fans would love to see reimagined, but probably won’t.

5) Kite Man

Kite Man is typically portrayed as a villain who opposes Batman. However, it would be a compelling twist to explore his character in a different light, especially considering other Batman villains have been reimagined as allies in the Absolute Universe. Seeing Kite Man as a friend to Batman, rather than an enemy, could be a really fun storyline.

As a film fan, I’ve always found Kite Man a surprisingly compelling character, especially considering his backstory. The death of his son is a really powerful element that I think could be explored in a darker, ‘Absolute’ version of the story. Instead of being the comedic relief we often see, imagine that grief transforming him into a truly formidable opponent. He could be fighting against the same evils as Batman, but driven by his own pain and using very different, potentially more extreme, methods. It’d be a challenge to make him more aggressive than Batman, but honestly, seeing that explored would be fascinating.

4) Constantine

I’m really excited about the potential for more magic-wielding characters in The Absolute Universe, and an Absolute version of John Constantine is high on my list! The thing is, Constantine already feels like he could fit into that extreme world, so this new take would need to be something truly different. Taking away his magic altogether would just retread familiar ground from the Hellblazer comics. But I think I’ve got a solution: a way to get an Absolute Constantine and another compelling character all rolled into one. It’s a fascinating possibility!

Combining the characters of Constantine and Etrigan could be really compelling. It wouldn’t drastically change who Constantine is, but it would create new challenges for him. The idea of Constantine being possessed by a demon – and constantly battling that possession while still trying to do good – offers a lot of potential for complex and fascinating stories.

3) Firestorm

It’s unlikely we’ll see this storyline happen, as it’s been suggested that Firestorm—or at least Ronnie Raymond—is already dead. A recent issue of Absolute Flash hinted that Ronnie was captured and experimented on, which doesn’t sound good. However, this is the Absolute Universe, so things aren’t always what they seem. That dark mention of Ronnie’s fate could actually be the beginning of a new Firestorm origin story.

There are many ways Firestorm could appear in the Absolute Universe, but a complete overhaul of the character’s origins seems likely. Perhaps Ronnie’s difficult journey to becoming a hero is connected to what happened after he was altered. What we do know is that fans are very enthusiastic about seeing Firestorm, making an Absolute version of the character the most probable on this list.

2) Black Lightning

An ‘Absolute Black Lightning’ storyline is unlikely, and truthfully, wouldn’t require much alteration to his existing story. Black Lightning’s origins – growing up in a troubled neighborhood in Metropolis marked by crime and corruption, and witnessing his father’s murder – already involve significant hardship, similar to what other ‘Absolute Heroes’ experience. However, fans would still enjoy seeing this darker take on the character.

To really make an ‘Absolute Black Lightning’ story compelling, it would be best to focus on developing the supporting characters. A particularly interesting idea would be to reimagine Gambi as a more villainous figure, perhaps even revealing that he had a hidden, manipulative role in Black Lightning’s past. This would add a lot of unexpected twists to the story.

1) Stargirl

It’s unclear how Stargirl would fit into the existing Absolute Universe, but if a version were created, the CW television show offers a good starting point. To make her fit the darker tone of the Absolute line, her origin story could be made more challenging. A compelling approach would be to give her a character arc similar to Cindy Burman’s from the show, forcing her optimism to be earned through hardship.

The CW show features Cindy, the Dragon King’s daughter, striving to be like him. However, the series reveals a traumatic childhood for her, filled with terrible experiments that are causing her to develop reptilian features. A similar storyline could be explored with Courtney, where she isn’t raised or trained by a traditional hero – or even a sidekick like Pat Dugan. This could lead to the emergence of an ‘Absolute Stargirl’ – a hero born from overcoming her own difficult past. Furthermore, her powers could be explained as a natural result of these experiments, offering a fresh take on the source of her abilities.
