Garfield is getting another TV show from Paramount, even though there’s already a successful movie series featuring the famous cat, currently distributed by Columbia Pictures.
Paramount+ is creating a new, traditionally animated series starring Garfield. Lamorne Morris, the Emmy-winning actor and comedian known for his role in Fargo, will be the voice of the famous orange cat.
The upcoming series, currently called Garfield, is being produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios. It’s based on Jim Davis’ classic comic strip and showcases the famously sarcastic, lazy, and lasagna-loving cat at his best.
Dave H. Johnson (Middlemost Post) and John Trabbic III (SpongeBob SquarePants, Middlemost Post) are the executive producers of the series. The show has been in development for a while, starting when Viacom first obtained the rights to the original cartoon. After Viacom and CBS merged, and Skydance later acquired Paramount, the rights ultimately landed with Skydance.
A new animated Garfield series is coming to Paramount+, marking the first since The Garfield Show aired on Cartoon Network and Boomerang from 2009 to 2014. Based on the famous comic strip that began in 1978, the show will follow Garfield the cat, his owner Jon Arbuckle, and their dog, Odie, along with their friends. The Garfield comic strip remains incredibly popular, with over 200 million readers every day and a large following on social media. It even holds a Guinness World Record as the most widely distributed comic strip, a title it’s held since July 2015.
