James Gunn, one of the heads at DC Studios, has spoken about one of Superman’s major Easter eggs – a large mural in the Hall of Justice depicting a group of classic superheroes. This mural provides a quick but intricate glimpse into the 300-year history of metahumans in the new DC Universe, suggesting a heroic lineage that exists before Superman (David Corenswet) and the film’s Justice Gang. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn revealed that the mural was carefully designed as part of the universe-building process and serves to hint at characters and ideas that will guide the future direction of the franchise.
Gunn highlighted that a great deal of consideration went into the mural’s creation, stressing its carefully planned design and character choices. When probed about whether the heroes featured in the artwork would appear in future DC Universe projects, he replied, “While not all of them will be directly shown, yes, some are already being developed for various projects in unique ways.
In the series Superman, the Hall of Justice serves as the base for the Justice Gang, a powerful superhero team sponsored by Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn). This group includes characters such as Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion). A large mural inside the building showcases a past version of the team, modeled after DC Comics’ Justice League of America. This artwork suggests that numerous iconic heroes from the DC Universe are present, including Doctor Fate, Wildcat, The Sandman, The Spectre, Black Pirate, Silent Knight, Atomic Knight, Amethyst of Gemworld, Freedom Beast, and Vibe. Historical figures like the 16th-century Black Pirate (Jon Valor) and the 6th-century Silent Knight (Brian Kent) are also depicted in the mural.
Where Will the JSA Members Appear in DC Studios’ Slate of Movies and TV Shows?
The upcoming schedule unveiled by DCU sets the stage for possible comebacks of classic heroes following the hint of Superman in an Easter egg. First up is Season 2 of Peacemaker, where Chris Smith (played by John Cena) grapples with Superman’s aftermath and meets returning figures like Maxwell Lord. Subsequently, a flurry of cinematic releases begins, starting with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in June 2026 and Clayface in September 2026. Any of these projects could offer more insights about the DCU’s upcoming heroes as teased by Gunn. Additionally, the eagerly awaited Lanterns series on HBO, featuring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, offers an excellent platform to delve into the heritage of Earth’s original Green Lantern, Alan Scott.
It’s possible that upcoming DCU projects not yet in production may include cameos from the Justice Society of America (JSA). James Mangold is still set to write and direct a standalone gothic horror film about Swamp Thing, which could provide an excellent setting for supernatural JSA members like Doctor Fate or The Spectre. Additionally, a character like Wildcat, who specializes in street-level combat, might suitably appear in The Brave and the Bold, potentially as an older Gotham vigilante from a past generation. Ultimately, the diverse nature of the DCU schedule means that the history depicted in the mural has numerous opportunities to be woven into the present day DCU.
Superman is now playing in theaters.
