Even without considering current events, the movie is fantastic. The acting is superb across the board, with Alicia Vikander giving a particularly impressive performance as the android. The film is beautifully shot, maintaining an artistic quality despite its high-tech subject matter, which adds to the overall sense of unease. But considering how quickly AI is becoming integrated into our daily lives, Ex Machina feels even more impactful and unsettling. We’re already seeing stories of people forming strong emotional connections with AI chatbots, sometimes with devastating consequences, and while AI hasn’t become malicious, it’s still a little frightening.
