“The Most Shocking Moment I’ve Seen in a Pixar Movie”: Disney Fans Are Floored by 1 Death Scene in Hoppers

This post contains spoilers for Hoppers

Even before its release this weekend, people were saying that Hoppers might be Pixar’s funniest movie yet. Pixar is known for combining humor with heartfelt stories, and Hoppers seemed like it would be even funnier than usual. The team behind the film clearly had a lot of creative freedom – we saw hints of this in the post-credits scene from Elio, which featured a lizard playfully interacting with a phone. Now that audiences are finally seeing the movie, one scene in particular is getting a lot of attention.

A scene in the movie Hoppers – where Mabel unintentionally crushes the Insect Queen – has sparked a lot of conversation on the r/movies subreddit. Some viewers called it the most shocking moment they’ve ever seen in a Pixar film, while others said it got the biggest laugh from the audience they’d ever heard. Many agreed it was a hilarious moment, particularly when Mabel wipes her paws on the wall, spreading the Insect Queen’s remains. One commenter praised Disney for being bold enough to include the scene.

Viewers have also pointed out that Hoppers strikes a perfect balance between wild, over-the-top humor and genuinely heartfelt moments, which is a hallmark of great Pixar movies. Some of the most talked-about bizarre scenes include the mayor’s robot losing its face and birds trying to crush a human-sized Jerry with a giant shark.

Hoppers Is a Breath of Fresh Air for Pixar

The trailers for Hoppers showed that the film represents a slight shift in direction for Pixar. It’s not a huge change in animation style or ambitious ideas, but rather in how the movie was made. The filmmakers were encouraged to be more creative, resulting in a film that feels both familiar – retaining classic Pixar elements – and new. This is especially evident in the movie’s humor, which occasionally uses dark comedy for laughs. A great example is the casual discussion of ‘pond rules,’ where animals simply accept the fact that they might become another animal’s dinner.

Mabel unexpectedly crushing the Insect Queen is a surprisingly dark comedic moment in Hoppers. It’s the kind of shocking violence you’d typically see in films by directors like Quentin Tarantino or the Coen brothers, not in a Pixar movie. While Pixar has tackled serious themes in the past, as seen in films like Up and Toy Story 3, this death scene is unlike anything they’ve done before. The unexpectedness is heightened by the fact that Meryl Streep, a renowned actress, voices the character, but in what amounts to a brief cameo.

The squishing scene is particularly effective because it’s not just there to be shocking. It actually moves the story forward, marking the lowest point for Mabel after she realizes she accidentally killed the queen and feels helpless to protect the glade. The queen’s death also sets up Titus, her spoiled son, as the film’s main villain. Dave Franco delivers a brilliantly wild and energetic performance as Titus, which significantly elevates the quality of Hoppers.

As a huge Pixar fan, I’m thrilled to see the incredible buzz around Hoppers. After Elio didn’t quite land last year, it’s so refreshing to see an original Pixar film getting rave reviews and looking like a potential box office success. Honestly, I was a little worried when people started comparing it to Avatar, but Hoppers quickly proves it’s something totally different – a genuinely inventive movie that blends hilarious, off-the-wall humor with a surprisingly touching story. I really hope it does well, because it could give Pixar the confidence to take even more creative risks with their future films, and that’s something I’d love to see!
