Tom Cruise’s $571M Action Movie With All-Time Great Stunts Is Officially a Top 10 Netflix Success

Originally a TV show in the 1960s, Mission: Impossible is now known as one of Hollywood’s most successful action movie series. For almost thirty years, Tom Cruise has thrilled audiences with thrilling adventures and incredibly dangerous stunts. From the iconic CIA heist in the first film, Cruise has continually pushed the boundaries with each new movie, including scaling the Burj Khalifa, clinging to a plane in mid-air, and completing a high-altitude, low-opening jump. It’s Cruise’s willingness to risk everything that makes the Mission: Impossible films so captivating, and fans continue to enjoy watching his daring feats.

From February 23rd to March 1st, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning ranked as the 7th most popular movie on Netflix in the U.S. It outperformed titles like Fall, Kpop Demon Hunters, and The Orphans to reach the top 10—this was the first week the film appeared on the chart.

Why Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Is a Hit on Netflix

As a huge fan of the Mission: Impossible films, I was so glad to finally see Dead Reckoning in theaters in the summer of 2023, after all the pandemic delays. It had a tough act to follow, though – many consider Fallout the best in the series! And honestly, it got a bit lost in the buzz around Barbie and Oppenheimer when it came to box office numbers. It made a respectable $571.1 million, but that’s noticeably less than the nearly $792 million Fallout earned. Because of that, Dead Reckoning doesn’t quite get the same level of praise as some of the earlier films, but I still think it’s a really fun action movie and definitely worth checking out.

As you’d expect from a Mission: Impossible film, Dead Reckoning is packed with incredible stunts – so much so that the stunt team won an award for their outstanding work! Director Christopher McQuarrie created several unforgettable action sequences, like a high-speed car chase in Rome, a daring motorcycle jump, and a thrilling train finale. The filmmakers prioritized practical effects whenever possible, making everything feel realistic and heightening the suspense for the audience.

While the action is definitely the biggest attraction in Dead Reckoning, the film offers more than just impressive stunts. Hayley Atwell joins the cast as Grace, bringing a lively and engaging energy to the series, and her scenes with Tom Cruise are particularly strong due to their fantastic chemistry. Atwell’s addition was a welcome one, allowing her to showcase her skills in action sequences. The film also introduces Esai Morales as Gabriel, who becomes Ethan Hunt’s main enemy throughout the later Mission: Impossible movies. He plays a convincingly menacing villain, giving the IMF team a compelling antagonist for audiences to root against. Combined with the already established connection between the returning actors, Dead Reckoning boasts a number of excellent performances alongside its thrilling action.

Watching a Mission: Impossible movie in a theater was always a great experience, as these films were made for large, high-quality screens. Luckily, they still look fantastic at home, especially now that many people have large TVs. While Dead Reckoning might not be quite as good as the best films in the series—which have set a very high standard—it’s still a very exciting action movie with incredible stunts that will leave you wanting to see how they were filmed. It’s no surprise it’s become popular on Netflix.
