With the release of Pokemon Pokopia, players are quickly becoming charmed by its delightful world. Many are calling it the best Pokemon game in years, thanks to its diverse gameplay, witty Pokemon interactions, and a surprisingly touching story. What really stands out is how cleverly the game references the history and lore of the main Pokemon series. As you journey through Pokopia, you’ll discover journals, pictures, and objects that connect to the broader Pokemon universe in meaningful and detailed ways.
You don’t need to be a longtime Pokémon fan to enjoy Pokopia. It’s a unique game that blends elements of Animal Crossing and Dragon Quest Builders, focusing on rebuilding towns and helping people – skills that don’t require knowledge of Pokémon battles or types. However, if you are familiar with the Pokémon world, you’re in for a treat! Pokopia is full of hidden references and Easter eggs that will delight longtime fans, and some are incredibly well done. Here are some of the most interesting pieces of Pokémon lore I’ve discovered while playing Pokémon Pokopia.
6) Finding CDs with Pokemon Music from Past Games

In Pokemon Pokopia, you can find hidden items by breaking blocks or investigating shimmering spots in the water. Discovering these often adds a new music CD to your collection. You can listen to these CDs using DJ Rotom or a stereo, and each one offers a charming glimpse into the world of Pokemon.
I haven’t found all of them yet, but I’ve discovered discs containing a variety of music from the original games, like tunes from the Game Corner and the S.S. Anne. Each discovery brings back fond memories of playing those games, even just seeing the title on the disc is enough to trigger them.
5) Cubone’s Habitat Requirements

Many locations in the game subtly nod to the world of Pokémon, but none are as poignant as the area inspired by Cubone. Longtime fans know Cubone’s story revolves around the loss of its mother – it even wears her skull. And the game, Pokopia, didn’t hold back from acknowledging this sad backstory.
If you want to attract Cubone in the game, you need to build a special habitat: a gravestone surrounded by flowers. When Cubone appears, it will comment that its mother would have loved the place – a really touching moment that fits with the game’s story. Interestingly, building this habitat also attracts Marowak, and I like to imagine it’s a way to reunite the mother and child Pokémon.
4) Outfits Based on Gym Leaders & Characters from the Series

Pokopia has a lot of fun hidden details, including different outfits, called “looks,” that you can unlock. You can find these by discovering special journal entries and photos, which will also let you transform into new Ditto forms. These forms are all based on characters from the original Pokemon games – some are really obscure references, while others, like Misty and Lt. Surge, are much more obvious.
Considering how simple most Ditto outfits usually are, this feature is a great way to offer players more customization. It’s also a nice nod to the iconic trainers and Gym Leaders who helped shape the Pokemon world. Being able to dress up as your favorite Pokemon character in the first Pokemon life simulation game is really exciting!
3) You Stumble Upon the Remnants of a Team Rocket Hideout
Team Rocket appears in Pokemon Pokopia in an unexpected way. Even without spoiling the details, fans of the team will find hints throughout the game. You’ll discover journal entries mentioning a Team Rocket member, and even explore what’s obviously an old Team Rocket base.
The Sparkling Skylands area seems to be based on a ruined version of Celadon City, so it wasn’t surprising, but still exciting, to discover a room with a huge Team Rocket poster while exploring the area. I was delighted several times while playing Pokopia, and finding this Team Rocket hideout was a definite highlight.
2) Bleak Beak Is Post-Apocalyptic Vermillion City & References A Longstanding Mystery

Throughout Bleak Beach, you can find notes that strongly suggest it’s the ruined remains of Vermillion City. As content creator Cecilily recently noted, the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet developers cleverly included a reference to an old mystery from the city: what happened to the building being constructed by that man and his Machoke?
Early Pokémon games featured a man and his Machoke working on a construction project, but it seemed to be abandoned by the next generation. For years, fans wondered what the project was and what happened to it. Later, a note appeared referencing an interview with Kenzo, the owner of the area’s biggest building, who was accompanied by a Machamp. This strongly suggests Kenzo is the same man from the original games, and that he ultimately succeeded in completing his construction project.
1) You Get to Explore the Wreckage of the S.S. Anne

Okay, so I was exploring Bleak Beach and totally recognized the S.S. Anne! Man, that ship brings back memories. If you’re anything like me, you probably spent hours as a newbie, rummaging through every trash can on that boat when you first played Pokemon. It’s docked in Vermillion City, and apparently, it was on its way back when everything went crazy in the Pokemon world.
After you learn to transform into Lapras, a friend will suggest you check out some distant ruins. Those ruins turn out to be the remains of the S.S. Anne! That was a really special moment for me and one of the reasons I love Pokopia so much.
