The popular historical drama Outlander will conclude after its eighth season, leaving fans wondering why the show is ending when the book series by Diana Gabaldon continues.
Since its 2014 debut, Outlander has become a hugely popular series by successfully combining romance, historical drama, and fantasy. The show has had a real-world impact too, attracting over 700,000 tourists to Scotland in 2023. It’s a massive hit with fans, selling 50 million books globally and reaching over 40 million U.S. households on Starz.
Despite the show’s popularity and the continuing book series it’s based on, Outlander will conclude after season 8. Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts and executive producer Maril Davis recently discussed the decision with Radio Times, admitting they weren’t in favor of ending the series at that point. Davis explained further that they didn’t want to stop with season 8 because…
We were prepared to continue, but I can only speak for myself. Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan would be the best people to ask about their feelings. However, after ten or twelve years with the show, I imagine most people would eventually want to pursue new opportunities and explore different projects.
I’d really like to complete Diana’s book series. We haven’t released the tenth book yet, so there’s a possibility of revisiting the story, depending on how we end season eight.
The creators of the Outlander series collaborated closely with author Diana Gabaldon during its production. Now that Gabaldon hasn’t yet finished the tenth book in the series, viewers are wondering how the TV show will conclude. Producer Roberts echoed comments made by Davis, explaining that while the show and the books share common origins – they have the “same DNA” – they are ultimately distinct entities and will likely have different endings.
We’re being careful and considerate because it feels strange finishing the TV series when the author still has another book planned. It’s challenging since we don’t know where she intends to take the story, so we need to find a way to wrap things up that’s both satisfying for the audience and respectful of her vision.
Although the show has finished its run, a new season hasn’t been ruled out. Both Davis and Roberts have suggested it’s possible. Davis explained that while nothing is definite, they wouldn’t completely dismiss the idea of returning in the future, saying it would depend on everyone’s availability, interest, and the right timing. They’ve left the possibility open for now.
Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) continue to struggle for their happiness, and the upcoming season will show how the Revolutionary War affects their lives as they rebuild at Fraser’s Ridge. However, the way things unfold in the TV series might not match the ending of Diana Gabaldon’s tenth book.
Season 8 of Outlander is now on Starz, and Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books are available to buy. While we’re still waiting for news on when book 10 will be released, it’s currently titled A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out.
