Robert Duvall’s Forgotten Western Series Boasts the Most Stacked Cast of All Time

Robert Duvall, a legendary actor, passed away in February, leaving behind a remarkable career in film. He delivered memorable performances in many critically acclaimed movies, including True Grit, Sling Blade, Apocalypse Now, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Godfather, and The Godfather Part 2. He will be remembered as one of Hollywood’s most gifted and celebrated stars.

Among his many accomplishments, the TV miniseries Lonesome Dove stands out as a remarkable Western epic. It’s celebrated for having one of the most impressive casts ever put together for television, featuring Hollywood stars like Oscar winners Robert Duvall, Anjelica Huston, Tommy Lee Jones, and Chris Cooper, along with Diane Lane and Danny Glover. The series also includes a wealth of talented character actors, including Steve Buscemi, William Sanderson, and Frederic Forrest.

‘Lonesome Dove’ Was a Huge Hit Upon Release

With a budget of around $20 million, Lonesome Dove is a sweeping movie adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Originally broadcast over four nights on CBS in February 1989, the story centers on two former Texas Rangers (played by Duvall and Jones) who embark on a dangerous cattle drive from Texas to Montana. They’re joined by a diverse group of cowboys, settlers, and outlaws, all seeking a better life in Montana, but quickly facing the harsh truths of frontier life.

An incredible 26 million households watched Lonesome Dove, a remarkably high number for a western miniseries at the time. The show was a critical success, earning 18 Emmy nominations in 1989 and winning seven awards. Viewers and critics alike praised its emotional power, realistic characters, and honest portrayal of the difficulties of life in 1870s America. Lonesome Dove offered a rare, movie-like experience on television, blending humor, sadness, and complex moral questions with stunning scenery and a grand scale.

‘Lonesome Dove’ Features an Eclectic Lineup of Stars

CBS

Lonesome Dove is an exceptional TV series – both grand in scope and deeply personal, humorous and thought-provoking, and often both harsh and beautifully written. It’s a story that requires incredibly talented actors to fully realize its potential, and the show’s stellar cast delivered, earning an Emmy Award for outstanding casting.

I absolutely loved how Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones carried this story as Gus and Call – Duvall was just incredible, honestly, and a lot of people say it’s some of his best work ever. But what really struck me was how strong all the supporting characters were. They weren’t just there in the background, they really drove the plot forward. And Danny Glover? Wow. After becoming famous for Lethal Weapon, he completely showed everyone what he could do with a dramatic role. His character, Joshua Deets, was so dignified and heartbreaking, and Glover brought so much humanity to him – it easily could have been a forgettable part, but he made it truly memorable.

What really struck me about this film was the strength of the women amidst a largely male cast. Diane Lane, who I’ve always admired from films like The Outsiders and Unfaithful, and Angelica Huston, unforgettable as Morticia Addams and in Prizzi’s Honor, both delivered such incredibly real and moving performances. They provided a beautiful emotional anchor to the story, especially considering all the wandering the male characters were doing! Beyond them, Robert Urich was just charming and heartbreaking as Jake Spoon, and Chris Cooper really stood out as the intense July Johnson. But honestly, it was the smaller roles, filled by actors like Steve Buscemi, William Sanderson, and Frederic Forrest, that truly brought this frontier world to life. Every single character felt real and fully developed, even if they only had a few minutes on screen. It really made the world feel so lived-in and authentic.

Despite a strong history and impressive qualities, this work has unfortunately been largely forgotten. It’s worth rediscovering, particularly now, as Westerns are enjoying a resurgence thanks to Taylor Sheridan and the growing world of Yellowstone.
