Amazon MGM Studios took a risk with a costly project, and it appears to be working out. They released a documentary about Melania Trump in theaters earlier this year, but it didn’t do well with audiences.
Amazon MGM Studios invested a significant amount of money in the film Melania and decided to release it on streaming quickly to maximize its return. Just one day after its January 30th release in theaters, Melania is now the most popular title on Prime Video, according to FlixPatrol.
The documentary performed exceptionally well in the U.S., exceeding expectations. While it didn’t achieve the same level of success internationally, it still made a strong debut, landing in the Top 10 in multiple countries. It reached number two in South Africa and number three in places like Ireland and Romania.
Amazon MGM Studios Believed Melania Would Pay Off
A new documentary about Melania Trump is being released during a particularly turbulent period in American politics. Amidst ongoing issues like the release of the Epstein files, the situation in Venezuela, and tensions with Iran, the film appears intended as a brief diversion from these more pressing events.
The film Melania isn’t just a biography of the First Lady; it’s a documentary that offers a look behind the scenes during the 20 days before a presidential inauguration. It follows Melania as she plans the inauguration events, deals with the challenges of moving into the White House, and brings her family back to Washington D.C.
The documentary features recordings of important meetings and personal talks, providing an unprecedented look behind the scenes of the presidential campaign.
Despite costing a significant $75 million to produce – including $40 million for the rights and $35 million for marketing – the documentary Melania didn’t perform well in cinemas. However, Amazon, which owns the rights to the series, didn’t seem to mind the poor box office results.
The film Melania debuted with $7 million in earnings and, even though critics didn’t like it, it has become a significant success story in recent years. It’s now earned more than After Death from Angel Studios, which made $5 million in 2023.
I was really fascinated to see how much buzz the Melania documentary created! The studio clearly thought it would bring in viewers and subscribers for Prime Video, and honestly, they seemed to be right. While we don’t have exact numbers on sign-ups or ad revenue, the fact that it immediately jumped to the number one spot on FlixPatrol tells me Prime Video made a smart move. It’s a really compelling story, and people are clearly interested!
The documentary replaced , which had been topping the charts for almost two weeks.
Melania Proved to Be Extremely Divisive
It’s not surprising that anything related to politics causes disagreement, as it’s a very sensitive subject, particularly online. But the reaction to Melania was far more intense than anyone expected.
The documentary received very negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, initially scoring only 11% based on 53 critic reviews. Critics generally agreed that while the film presents itself as an intimate look at the First Lady, it ultimately reveals very little about her personally.
The movie received a surprising review from former President Donald Trump, who posted on X shortly after its release: “Last night I saw, MELANIA, for the second time. The audience loved it, and so do I. Check it out — A MUST SEE!” Viewers gave it a very positive rating, with 98% recommending it.
Rotten Tomatoes has stated to The Hollywood Reporter that audience reviews for the Melania documentary have not been tampered with. They also confirmed that the scores on their “Popcornmeter” only reflect verified reviews – meaning they’ve confirmed that reviewers actually purchased tickets through Fandango.
Melania is streaming on Prime Video.
