Konami announced on social media that over 5 million people worldwide have played the Silent Hill 2 remake. This number, accurate as of the end of January, includes both purchased copies (physical and digital) and those accessed through game subscription services.
The game last reached a significant milestone in October 2025, when Konami announced it had sold over 2.5 million copies globally, including both physical and digital versions.
Silent Hill 2 is a scary psychological horror game where James Sunderland receives a mysterious letter three years after his wife’s death. The letter, seemingly from his late wife Mary, asks him to meet her in Silent Hill, a place that held special meaning for them. The game was initially released on PC and PlayStation 5 in October 2024, and later became available on Xbox Series X/S in November 2025.
The game first launched in 2004 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC, and critics loved it. It was praised for its scary atmosphere, compelling story, and memorable characters.
Because fans love the original game so much, the developers at Bloober Team spent a lot of time looking into fan theories while making the remake. Level designer Anna Oporska-Szybisz mentioned in a presentation last year that a major focus of this research was the Labyrinth.
We spent countless hours examining everything available online, from fan theories to details about the series,” Oporska-Szybisz explained. “Our top priority has always been respecting the fans and taking their ideas seriously.
To be honest, I wasn’t initially thrilled with everything I discovered, but as we delved deeper and weighed the advantages and disadvantages, I grew to appreciate the creative thinking behind the Labyrinth. I really wanted to include as much of it as possible in the final product.
Since then, Bloober Team created another horror game called Cronos: The New Dawn. Director Jacek Zięba explained that the studio didn’t feel well-known until they announced Silent Hill 2 Remake.
After working on Silent Hill, things started to feel different. Honestly, the public reaction during that time wasn’t easy. We heard a lot of negativity – people were worried we’d mess it up. It was really tough for all of us at the company to stay focused and pour our hearts into the project when so many doubted us. But we stuck to our vision, and it feels great to have proven those doubters wrong.
