First-person shooter games are incredibly popular, and a big part of their appeal is how realistic they feel. Games like Call of Duty and Arma are known for their accurate depictions of weapons. As a veteran, I especially appreciate the effort developers put into making these games feel authentic. While video game combat isn’t the same as real life, many FPS games have impressively detailed and realistic weapons and combat systems. I’ve reviewed a lot of them and compiled a list of seven that come the closest to feeling real – here they are, in no specific order.
1) Gun Club VR

If you’re fascinated by firearms but lack access to them, Gun Club VR provides a remarkably realistic experience. Released in 2018 by The Binary Mill, this virtual reality game is known for its incredibly accurate simulations. It’s not a typical first-person shooter with a storyline; instead, it focuses entirely on faithfully recreating a wide variety of guns – from pistols and rifles to shotguns and sniper weapons – and letting you experience them in different virtual environments.
2) Arma III

The Arma series is known for its realistic and well-designed weapons, and Arma III takes this to the next level. Although the game is set in the near future with some futuristic guns, the weapons behave and look incredibly authentic. It accurately simulates things like bullet trajectory and recoil, making it feel surprisingly like firing a real gun. Players need to carefully calibrate their weapons, account for bullet drop, manage recoil, and practice controlled firing – wasting ammunition can seriously hurt your chances of survival.
3) America’s Army

In 2002, the U.S. Army released America’s Army, a free first-person shooter game intended to attract potential recruits and teach players about the military. As an Army recruiter at the time, I saw many people come in hoping to get a copy, but it didn’t actually increase enlistment numbers. Despite that, the game itself was well-made and aimed at appealing to young players. A major focus during development was realism – the weapons were digitally modeled with incredible accuracy. The Army continued to improve and release new versions of America’s Army over the years, and it still has a dedicated player base.
4) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

The creators of Call of Duty have always strived for realistic weapons, and while many games in the series do a good job, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is among the best. It was the first Call of Duty game to move away from World War II, instead focusing on modern conflicts for its story and weapon designs. The weapons in Modern Warfare are impressively realistic, with accurate attachments. While not every detail is perfect, the game largely succeeded in creating believable firearms.
5) Battlefield 1

As a big fan of the Battlefield series, I’ve always appreciated how realistic the weapons feel. The vehicles are great too, but Battlefield 1 really stands out to me when it comes to authentic weaponry. Everything – from the rifles to the gadgets – is based on real-world counterparts. The Winchester Model 1897 shotgun and the Standschütze Hellriegel M1915 are particularly well done; they just look amazing in the game. Sure, the game sometimes has to tweak things for balance, so it’s not exactly how those guns would perform in real life, but overall, Battlefield 1 nails the realism of its weapons better than any other game in the series, in my opinion.
6) Squad

Squad is a realistic military tactical shooter designed to portray modern warfare authentically. Players engage in large-scale battles as military forces against paramilitary groups, and success relies heavily on clear communication and teamwork. The game features incredibly detailed and accurate weapon models that function much like their real-world counterparts, emphasizing a truly realistic squad-based experience.
7) Arma Reforger

The Arma series is known for its realism, and Arma Reforger takes that even further. It’s a tactical shooter focused on authentic weapons, featuring incredibly detailed models and how they function. Arma Reforger was also created to test the engine for the upcoming Arma IV, and it performs exceptionally well, successfully blending intense realism with fun, open-world gameplay. I’m really looking forward to seeing just how realistic Arma IV will be – and based on past games, I have high expectations.
