This August, HBO Max will premiere Lanterns, marking the first major live-action Green Lantern project since 2011. Despite several attempts to revive the franchise during the DC Extended Universe era, previous efforts failed to launch. A Green Lantern Corps movie was once planned for a 2020 release, but it was ultimately cancelled. Zack Snyder had also envisioned Wayne T. Carr portraying John Stewart in Justice League, but that plan was replaced with Harry Lennix as Martian Manhunter. Now, years later, Snyder is reflecting on these abandoned ideas.
Zack Snyder recently posted on Instagram a behind-the-scenes photo of himself with actor Nathan Fillion, who was wearing a motion capture suit for his role as Green Lantern. The post also included an image of Fillion’s character, John Stewart, in his Green Lantern uniform. This came at a time when the trailer for the upcoming Lanterns series received criticism online. Fans quickly noticed the timing, with many commenting about the negative reaction to the trailer and expressing their desire for Snyder’s previous DC films (the “Snyderverse”) to be revived. You can see Snyder’s post below.
Why Is the DC Universe’s Lanterns So Divisive?
Starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, Lanterns is generating a lot of buzz and might be the most anticipated DC project this year, alongside films like Supergirl and Clayface. While fans have been eager to see the Green Lantern Corps take the spotlight again, the initial preview of Lanterns surprised many. Some viewers were taken aback by its realistic, gritty style, which resembled a trailer for a crime drama like an HBO series, rather than a typical comic book show. Despite comparisons to True Detective before the trailer’s release, the noticeable absence of traditional Lantern powers and visual effects led to some negative reactions.
One of the main criticisms of the Lanterns series so far is that it doesn’t quite capture the classic feel of a Green Lantern story. Some fans miss the epic scope and bright visuals that made the best comics so memorable. This reaction is visible in comments online, with many expressing their preference for Carr’s portrayal of John Stewart and saying it’s a more authentic Green Lantern look. However, it’s still early days for the Lanterns promotion. With the show not debuting until August, there’s likely still significant work being done on the visual effects. DC Studios seems to be prioritizing polished visuals and chose to highlight the relationship between Hal Jordan and John Stewart in the trailer instead.
It’s likely Zack Snyder didn’t mean any harm with his recent post. He has a good relationship with James Gunn and has always supported Gunn’s plans for the DC Universe and the new Superman films. Seeing the Lanterns trailer probably just reminded Snyder of his time working on DC projects and made him reflect on how things could have turned out differently. While he’s moved on to other projects, he clearly still cares about DC heroes and would have enjoyed the chance to create his version of Green Lantern for the big screen.
Despite a mixed reaction to the trailer, there’s still a lot of hope for the Lanterns series. The DC Universe had a successful launch last year with Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 (although the finale divided viewers), and Lanterns co-creator Damon Lindelof has a strong history of making great TV shows, like his acclaimed adaptation of Watchmen. Adding to the excitement, Pierre is returning as John Stewart from Man of Tomorrow, making Lanterns a key part of the DC Universe’s future. It looks like it will be a unique addition to the DCU story, and fans are hoping it delivers on its promise.
